- We recently received one of the "re-designed" Gateway 2000
- Telepaths. We had originally received a Telepath early in
- May. The modem had worked for about 3 weeks and then it
- quit working. At the best of times, it would only connect
- to a single other modem (a USR Courier v.32bis) that was
- located down the hall from where the Telepath was.
-
- We finally received a replacement Telepath this week. It
- looks very similar to the older modem, but appears to have
- some sort of "transformer"? on the board. I am clearly not
- versed sufficiently in electronics to even begin guessing at
- what it is, but it looks like a miniature transformer.
-
- The modem connected successfully to several FAX machines,
- and received faxes as well. However, it would *not* connect
- to any V.32/V.42/V.42bis modem or a V.32bis/V.42/V.42bis
- modem. It would connect to plain old 2400 bps modems as
- long as they did not have *any* sort of hardware error
- correction (MNP or V.42). After three calls to GW2000
- tech support, the techs agreed with our feeling that we had
- received a dud. They claimed that this was the first
- "redesigned" Telepath that didn't work.
-
- But this tale has a happy ending yet. We received another
- Telepath today, probably as a replacement for the original
- defective Telepath (?) as we were told that we would receive
- a replacement for our "redesigned" Telepath in about a week.
- At any rate, this modem works like a charm! I have dialled
- several other types of modems (ranging from those on Hayes
- BBS line - 800-US-HAYES; are these Ultra 144 modems?) to
- Telebit T2500, T3000, USR Courier V.32bis, USR Dual Standards
- (V.32/HST), generic 2400 bps modems, and one 1200 bps
- modem.
-
- File transfer rates for compressed files are in the range of
- 1500 - 1600 cps for a V.32bis connection. Text files have
- transferred at about 3000 - 3100 cps. The DTE rate was set
- at 57600 bps. The transfer protocol was ZModem, and the
- communication software was Crosstalk for Windows 1.2.2
-
- Gateway includes a copy of the updated version of Crosstalk
- for Windows that support DTE rates higher than 19200 bps with
- the "redesigned" Telepath.
-
- In conclusion, thus far we are pleased with the new Telepath,
- and I await with keen anticipation the experiences of others
- with this modem.
