- I can't speak directly about tape backups, but I have been using a parallel
- port hard drive on an 8086 laptop for several months now. It works very
- well, and based on a subjective opinion, it transfers data nearly as fast
- as a bus mounted controller. The best part is I can move all my
- applications and data to almost anyother DOS machine without violating any
- licensing agreements.
-
- I have found only two problems to date:
-
- 1- When I first print from an application that simultaneously sends init
- codes to the printer while loading a printer driver overlay from the drive,
- my Epson printer will hang and must be reset - then everything works fine
- (this happens with MS-Works 2.0) for all subsequent printing.
-
- 2- If I download a file directly to the parallel port connected hard drive,
- each time my comm program (Procomm Plus 1.1b) writes the receive buffer to
- the file (every 10K or so), the next block transmitted will have an error
- and must be re-transmitted. I solved this on my laptop by doing all
- downloads to floppy and transferring them to the hard drive later.
-
- Since I doubt you will be using a tape system under either of the above
- situations, it should perform very well for you.
