  21. There are eight color sets, numbered zero through seven.  Each
  22. character on the screen is associated with exactly one color set.
  23. Now, you can have any foreground and any background you like assigned
  24. to a given color set -- but there are only eight sets, so you are
  25. limited to a total of eight color combinations displayed at once.

  27. (On the other hand, you can specify fractional red, green and blue
  28. values for each color set.  As a co-worker of mine observed: "You can
  29. only have eight colors -- but they're eight _bitchin'_ colors.")

  31. Worse, hpterm remembers where you specified that a color should begin
  32. to be displayed.  The only way to be sure that you're getting a clean
  33. slate of colors is to use the clear-to-end-of-line command ("nuke it
  34. from orbit") and redraw the whole line.

  36. As if that weren't enough: since my original article I've found out
  37. that only eight of the twelve function keys generate distinct escape
  38. sequences -- F9-F12 repeat F1-F4 -- and the arrow keys can't generate
  39. escape sequences at all!
