- An odd problem has recently showed up on our 847 (HPUX 8.02) and 720 (HPUX
- 8.07) systems.
-
- For about the last week or so, all logins (through telnet, rlogin, or at
- the console) have been very slow. The 'login:' and 'password:' prompts
- come up right away, but once you've entered a successful login there is
- a delay of a couple of minutes before the login procedure completes and
- the shell prompt appears. Incorrect logins are failed immediately.
- This happens uniformly for all users, so .profiles can't be at fault
- (and they don't run slowly when executed manually). /etc/profile seems
- to be fine as well, and we've never touched it.
-
- What else does login(1) do that could be slow? We're running both NFS
- and NIS. CPU and network loads aren't high. Once the login does complete,
- there are never any performance problems.
-
- Has anyone seen these symptoms before? Any assistance is greatly
- appreciated.
