- I have a DecStation 5000/120 running Ultrix 4.2a with a tkz10 tape drive.
- The question is, what is the tape density? I've tried the following:
-
- I came up with the figures of 16000 and 22400 as density (bpi) and length (ft).
- You'll see that they work out to be 525MB. When I do a dump I get the
- following on aurora (the DecStation).
-
- aurora:# dump 0dsf 16000 22400 /dev/rmt1h /dev/rz1c
- DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Mon Jul 27 11:36:15 1992
- DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
- DUMP: Dumping /dev/rrz1c (/home/aurora) to /dev/rmt1h
- DUMP: Mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
- DUMP: Mapping (Pass II) [directories]
-
- DUMP: Esa density of 16000 BPI...
- DUMP: This dump will occupy 77760 (10240 byte) blocks on 0.39 tape(s).
-
- DUMP: Dumping (Pass III) [directories]
-
- The partition is 800MB full out of 1.0Gig.
- Obviously 0.39 tapes is too little - it should be about 1.4 tapes. I tried
- dumping rz0a like this and it worked fine - I could restore files. But this
- means that the capacity of the tape is ~2.3 Gig!
-
- If I try with density of 358400 and length of 1000 which also works out to
- be 525 MB and I get the following:
- aurora:# dump 0dsf 358400 1000 /dev/rmt1h /dev/rz1c
- DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Mon Jul 27 11:40:28 1992
- DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
- DUMP: Dumping /dev/rrz1c (/home/aurora) to /dev/rmt1h
- DUMP: Mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
- DUMP: Mapping (Pass II) [directories]
-
- DUMP: Estimates based on 1000 feet of tape at a density of 358400 BPI...
- DUMP: This dump will occupy 77772 (10240 byte) blocks on 4.72 tape(s).
-
- DUMP: Dumping (Pass III) [directories]
-
- What goes here?
-
- I try to do a rdump on terry (a SPARC ELC running 4.1.1) to aurora and I
- get the following:
- rdump 0dsf 16000 22400 aurora:/dev/rmt1h /dev/sd0h
- DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Mon Jul 27 11:38:58 1992
- DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
- DUMP: Dumping /dev/rsd0h (/home/terry) to /dev/rmt1h on host aurora
- DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
- DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
- DUMP: estimated 1495094 blocks (730.03MB) on 0.28 tape(s).
- DUMP: dumping (Pass III) [directories]
- rdump: Lost connection to remote host.
- DUMP: Broken pipe
- DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
-
- but if I use the default density it works OK.
- Any ideas?
