- To Mark B. Czarnowski,
-
- The Atari modem you describe is the SX212. I don't know of a current
- source off of the top of my head, but I'm sure you could find one at
- approximately that price by poking around a bit.
-
- As for 8-bit software, it takes some digging, but there IS some good
- stuff still available if you know where to look, and the prices are
- QUITE reasonable. One source I'm sure you haven't heard of is an
- Atari store in Boerne, Texas. Here's the story:
-
- For many years Floyd Blunk has owned and operated a truly excellent
- Atari store in Boerne or San Antonio (it moved back and forth through
- the years) called Atari-Ville, supporting the 8-bit at first and later
- adding the ST. His prices were always excellent and his selection of
- software phenomenal. He offered hardware service, but only typically
- sold the lower-end hardware that moved in volume.
-
- Early this year Floyd sold the Atari business so as to concentrate on
- his H&R Block franchise and his Sears catalog store franchise. The
- new owner had no interest in the 8-bit side of the business and did
- not take Floyd's 8-bit stock. Floyd therefore moved all the 8-bit
- stuff, as well as some ST stuff the new owner wasn't interested in,
- to the H&R Block office in Boerne and has been selling it off at fire
- sale prices ever since. New, unopened software for my 8-bit I bought
- for prices ranging from $1 to $4, including things like AtariWriter +
- and Write 80. I bought backup copies of many of the games my kids
- play often just because they were so cheap (and I have no Happy).
- I bought my son a brand-new, never opened XDM121 daisywheel printer
- for $39.95. Yes, Floyd is quite willing to take phone orders and
- ship anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.
-
- If you are interested in getting a list of what's currently still
- available, or just checking to see if he has a copy of something
- specific that you are looking for, call the H&R Block office in
- Boerne, Texas. I just dug around looking for a phone number and
- found (512)249-3024, but I'm not sure whether that's the H&R Block
- number or the old (now defunct) Atari-Ville number, so you may have
- to resort to directory assistance.
-
- I hope this helps.
