- Ok, I just got off the phone with Zip...I was interested in knowing whether
- one could obtain just the ASIC upgrade, and install the 14MHz 65816, the
- crystal, and the faster SRAM oneself. This was in line with the suggestion
- someone made here that the gate array was bottlenecked at 12.4MHz or so.
- The word from the person I talked to:
-
- "The gate array is the fastest thing on that board."
-
- In other words, she says that there is no bottleneck, and no ASIC upgrade
- is needed. The gate array can go to 19MHz or so. The main problem, she says,
- is getting 15ns SRAM in a wide package (I didn't broach the question of why,
- if 15ns is needed for 14MHz, they ship 9MHz Zips with 70ns RAM).
-
- Of course, she wasn't big on the idea of user upgrades in general, but I
- did get her to begrudgingly admit that it was possible (but will certainly
- void your 1 year warranty).
