- The Amiga has 4 "oscillators", or more accurately 4 digital to analog
- converters. "Oscillator" is a term left over from analog synthesis
- techniques that has held on in the Ensoniq terminology for some reason.
-
- It's been a while since I've seen Electric Duet. If this is the Apple II
- program that managed to play more than once "voice" from the 1-bit speaker,
- yup, the analogy is appropriate. Games that managed to do this are Airheart
- (still amazing) and I think the opening screen for Archon. And of course,
- there's Music COnstruction Set.
-
- I remember some music program that tried to do it by just playing notes very
- fast. A game that produced music like this (through arpeggio like stuff)
- was Microwave. Anyone remember it? :)
-
- With wider DACs, you could add multiple waveforms together to form a single
- composite waveform, then output that through the speaker with no apparent
- loss of sound quality other than perhaps a bit of distortion induced by
- truncation errors during scale&add process. Tracker-players for machines
- like the SparcStation (1 or 2 channels), the IBM-PC (many configurations),
- and even the NeXT have to add tracks together to output through a limited
- number of DACs. Sound quality is also affected by low output rates
- in some cases (like the Sparc with 8-bit 8K/sec mono output, or any
- SoundBlaster equipped IBM-PC)
