- Since there have been several postings on whether or not people should get
- a CDTV or CD-ROM drive and which drive should people get, I decided to
- post my experiences in the hopes that others can use them.
-
- I bought a CDTV as an experiment. I liked the concept and wished to play
- with it. (Not to mention, you can drop your nephew in front of it and relax.)
- I then quickly realized there was an entire Amiga inside and setup a kybd,
- drives, and parnet to connect to my other Amiga. By using parnet off of the
- floppy I could read the CD-ROMs from my 3000 and use the 3000s Hard
- Drives from the CDTV.
-
- Later I decided to also purchase a CD-ROM drive for my 3000, partially due
- to the relocation of the CDTV and partially due to the transfer speeds. So, I
- looked and found the cheapest CD-ROM drive available ($199 from DAK) and
- purchased that one (NEC CDR-80), purchased the CDROM-FS from Canadian
- Prototype Research (What is in a name?) Upon changing my SCSI address of
- the Hard Drive I booted AmigaDOS to be lower than the SCSI address of the
- CD-ROM drive I had a very workable system.
-
- So, my experiences and opinions are as follows....
-
- Benefits of CDTV <-> Amiga setup.
- 1: Could use either machine independantly of one another.
- 2: Could have access of CD-ROM from 3000 and vice versa.
- 3: Really impressive looking ($10.00 networking is great.)
-
- Drawbacks to CDTV <-> Amiga setup
- 1: Cost of setup (must buy two machines)
- 2: Machines must be closer than 50 ft
- 3: Speed of transfer a bit slow.
-
- Benefits of CD-ROM drive in Amiga
- 1: cheaper than buying CDTV ($800 vs $199)
- 2: faster transfer rates (600 Kb/s vs 220 Kb/s) (my speeds)
- 3: integrated system. Can use both systems with different disks.
-
- Drawbacks of CD-ROM drive in Amiga
- 1: different caddy for CD-Rom drive than CDTV. (pain in the a&&)
- 2: If CD-ROM is lower than Amiga Boot SCSI device, Amiga took
- 3 min to boot instead of 9 secs.
- 3: YATTGW (Yet Another Thing To Go Wrong)
