- When you buy a PC card, you are getting just that - a CARD. When you buy an
- Amiga serial device solution, you get a serial board AND a driver. Don't
- forget that serial driver, as it is the part that differentiates between the
- various boards MUCH more than the hardware itself does. There is also quite
- a bit of time that goes into development (and for some companies,
- even debugging :-( of this device.
-
- I myself have owned a Supra 2400bps internal (modem0.device) and an
- ASDG DSB. I have been looking very closely at a new board that is coming out,
- and have been attempting to get ahold of a beta board and driver to do some
- major testing with it since the ASDG board does not suit my needs.
-
- Here is some background, for those who didn't read my 'apology' message some time ago.
- While the DSB hardware is quite well done, the serial driver that comes with it
- is extremely poor, and needs some major work. If one tries to run the device
- with some of the popular debugging tools (Such as an Enforcer/MungWall
- combination) the driver will eithor just STOP DEAD as soon as you do any
- serial requests, or it will GURU the machine as soon as you open the
- device. I spoke to ASDG when I first was able to reproduce the
- above problem extremely reliably, but they were busy with other products at that
- time. I actually got driver sources (Under Non-disclosure for the source -
- I thank ASDG very much for being willing to release the sources to myself), but
- I was never able to find the problem (Didn't spend the needed time, really.
-
- The moral of the story? Realize that a serial port for the Amiga is
- JUST-AS-MUCH a software product as it is a hardware product, which is very
- similar to the Amiga itself. When you buy a PC, or PC peripherals, you are getting
- JUST HARDWARE, and thus the development costs don't include the software
- development. For an 'equal hardware platform', an Amiga, or Amiga
- peripheral will always cost more than the PC.
-
-
- P.S. For myself, I could care less about the Graphics and sound of the Amiga.
- I bought my Amiga because of the awsome O.S. as I wanted to get deeply
- involved in networking, and the Amiga platform is easier to develop for than a
- UNIX based platform, the only other 'realistic' alternative in todays market.
- About the only 'hardware' advantage I see on the Amiga is the
- speed of the Zoro expansion itself, which allows for considerably faster
- I/O than is available on the majority of other platforms.
