- TeX [*] is a typesetting language, sort of like PostScript or troff;
- that is to say, you feed it text interspersed with layout commands, and
- it spits out a file that can eventually be converted into a prettily-printed
- document. It is also the de facto standard typesetter in academia.
- One important thing to note is that TeX is *not* a word processor:
- you need to use a text editor to create the text file that TeX will read.
- TeX has the advantage over PostScript that you can actually write
- papers in TeX, whereas people who write PostScript are generally considered
- odd geniuses. TeX is also much more readable than troff.
- TeX comes in two main flavors: plain TeX and LaTeX (there are lots
- of other dialects out there, like AMSTeX). Plain TeX is basically just a
- bunch of typesetting primitives and macros, and is fairly low-level. LaTeX
- is a lot prettier, but can be painful to use if you don't want to use one
- of the predefined styles.
-
- [*]: TeX is pronounced to rhyme with 'blechh'. If you don't the author will
- be very very mad at you.

-
- There are Unix versions of lharc and lha floating around. Ask your
- friendly neighborhood archie site where to find them.
- If all else fails, you can chop the (binary) file into several 720K
- chunks, then 'join' them on your Amiga.
