- |I have an A3000 16/50 with an Archive Viper 150MB tape drive.
- |I routinely use the BTN-Tape handling stuff and TAR command
- |(both from Fish disks) to do system backups. Works great!
- |
- |I work on an IBM RS-6000 system, with its own 15MB tape drive.
- |I have been trying to transfer large quantities of data
- |(22 - 30 MB) from work to home by using tar from the RS-6000
- |at work to load the tape with data, then using tar to read the
- |data. "tar tvf tape:" works fine. I can read the tape, and get a
- |complete list of files on the tape including the "." for the
- |directory under UNIX (this could be a problem?). But, "tar xvf tape:"
- |does not work, the tape begins to read, then the hard drive light
- |locks on, and the system dies. I then have to cold boot, reload
- |KickStart from floppy, and sometimes re-validate my drive.
- |
- |Why is this failing? Is there that much difference between file
- |structure types and file systems, AIX vrs Intuition? I tried
- |a SVR4 box (DRS-6000 from ICL, a real dog) to write the tapes
- |also, I can't even read those, though I suspect that is a problem
- |with the ICL box writing proprietary headers...
- |
- |Thanks in advance,
- |Scott Nolan

- I had similar problems but in the reverse direction. I couldn't read
- the fish tapes [written by an Amiga] on my SGI or RS/6000. Turns out
- there was a compatability issue in the directory header of the tar
- image. I ended up building GNU tar on my SGI and was then able to read
- the tapes. I'd guess that you need a newer version of tar for the Amiga.
- GNU tar should work just fine.
