- Some time ago I converted our 9000/210's image backups to use
- /compaction (IDRC), so I could estimate the effect of IDRC.
-
- Without IDRC, I've seen 2.1 Mbyte of disk data (derived from DISK QUOTA)
- backup up upon 11 TA90 cartridges, amounting to about 190 MByte/TA90 net.
- With IDRC (and some weeks later), the same disks (still holding 2.1 Mbytes)
- took 7 cartridges, amounting to about 300 Mbyte/TA90.
- On another volume set with similar usage, I've seen 2
- MByte backed up w/IDRC upon 6 TA90's, resulting in about 340 MByte/TA90.
- These are "user disks", i.e. no really big files.
- BACKUP's block size was 32256 throughout.
- Tape usage has not varied much since then, so I assume that
- the compression factor of about 1.8 is a good estimate for
- general BACKUPs.
-
- BTW, I've seen /compacted tapes holding more than 340 MBytes;
- as an extreme case, once I tried out HSC (physical) backup on
- a *new* RA90 disk (all blocks zeroed out) and indeed, it would
- all fit on a single cartridge!
