- Hi there,
-
- does anyone have any experience (good or otherwise) with using
- an Ethernet (EtherTalk) connected Apple LaserWriter IIg from
- DEC CPS (DECprint Printing Services for VMS/whatever it is
- called these days) ?
-

-
- Well here is a horror story for you. We connected a couple of HP
- LaserJet IIISi's to ethernet using these 'boxes' called Etherprints (phonenet
- appletalk to ethernet whiz-bang boxes). I set up some queues on my VAX
- to point to them (using MSA) so we could print reports directly to the
- user's offices. Sounded good to me, worked well too - once we got the users
- to stop turning the printer off, or changing it's appletalk name. Now you
- couldn't use any of the neat-o fancy features the HP had because you needed
- a special printer driver on your MAC to take advantage of these, and I just
- couldn't get that 3.5 disk in my TK50. We didn't need to modify any CPS stuff
- of anything in the MSA libraries either - it just worked (now isn't that scary).
-
- Well, leaving something that works alone is like trying to get a system mgr
- to stop tweaking tuning parameters on his VAX. So, we buy the HP ethernet
- board for these printers. This board is from HP, fits in the printer and puts
- it directly on the ethernet talking appletalk. Seems like a logical thing to
- do. So we did it. The MAC's could still print to it just fine - but the VAX
- couldn't find the printers anymore. If we went back to the Etherprint boxes
- everything worked fine. But the VAX would not talk to HP's appletalk card.
-
- Of course, I talked to DEC about this and, of course, I got a very decisive
- 'beats me'
-
- Just something inquiring minds might want to know...
