- Well, I got the final word from the POV-Team leader today.
- Here is what he said:
-
- From: Drew Wells <73767.1244@CompuServe.COM>
- To: <johns@cs.umr.edu>
- Subject: OS/2 Port of POV-Ray
-
- The beta test has to happen on Compuserve with CIS users. I hate to play
- the bad guy here, but I'm the one who gets the "Why doesn't this work?"
- mail. Your intentions are great, but every version that has been released
- outside of the CIS development circle has made its way all over the place.
- And it is impossible to coordinate new code changes easily unless all
- involved are on Compuserve.
-
- Even with CIS it's hard to keep everyone in sync with code, docs, etc.
- I'm sorry, but I have to be strict, the rules are these:
-
- --No executable or modified copy of POV-Ray can be distributed without
- the permission of the POV-Team. That permission will not be granted
- easily. Every new exe or slight modification creates more work and
- support problems.
- --No exe can be released without going through testing by the primary
- developers on CIS.
- --The compiler/author of a particular exe or special file must have
- a CIS account and be available on CIS to answer questions, make mods,
- and field problem reports.
-
- So, please do not distribute any executables or doc files you have
- compiled. If you get a CIS account and are available to support the version
- you compile, then we can discuss possibilities.
-

-
- So that is the official word on the legality of releasing the executables.
-
- I don't know who he thinks I am, but I don't have the cash to spend on
- getting a compuserve account just so I can release a binary.
-
- I talked to Turgut, and I think that He'll be releasing his port anyway. :-)
- (his and mine are identical as it turns out, we both did the same thing)
-
- At least they can't sue him :-)
-
- If you are as pissed as I am, then mail a polite question asking
- Mr. Wells, where the OS/2 port is :=)
-
- Don't be rude to him, just send him a bunch of mail asking him where
- the OS/2 version is, and if there isn't one, then WHY NOT!!!!!
-
- That ought to get him to change his mind.
-
- (he thinks he'll have it easier if he doesn't have to answer questions
- about an OS/2 version, so show him your interest instead :=)
-
-
- I hope he removes the silly restriction...
