- Help! Installing Gcc , X
- Query: FTP & tcp/ip
-
- I have installed linux 0.96c with modest success, I now have a basic
- system set up on a 386 ,80mb drive ,1.2mb & 1.44mb floppies,+ trident svga
- and an ethernet card,
-
- The hard drive is partitioned with
- 40mb MS-dos 5.0
- 40mb Linux
- 3mb MS-dos (available for sacrifice)
-
- I'm impressed so far, I thought that installing a *nix on an x86
- would be a bit of a nightmare, how wrong could I be.
-
- However,
- I'm am having trouble installing GCC 2.xx on my system, the method I
- have been using to install other software is as follows,
-
- 1. FTP files onto a VAXstation (I have it on my desk)
- I have a VMS version of TAR & COMPRESS/UNCOMPRESS
- (which can be quite useful at times)
-
- 2. uncompress the files on the VAX
-
- 3. Transfer tar files to the 386 using ftp from dos
-
- 4. copy the tar files to floppy using rawrite2
-
- 5. Boot linux and read the disks.
-
- The problem is that this won't work for tar files larger than 1.44mb
-
- i.e. 2.xxdb.tar,2.xxmisc.tar
-
- re-making the tarfiles on the VAX is out because all the filnames will loose
- their case sensitivity in the VMS environ. + filenames will be changed.
-
- Can anyone suggest any solutions? Has anyone else had this problem.
-
- I thought it might be a good idea to put the floppy disk images
- for a multi volume tar archive onto one of the archive sites.
-
- I could use mtools to get the files directly from the dos partition
- but I only have the source code. I've looked for the binaries but can't
- seem to find any.
-
- the nicest method would be to get the tar files via ftp , I am a little
- confused regarding the exact state of ftp|tcp/ip developments under linux
-
- Could someone with experience with FTP|TCP/ip under linux give me some
- advice, I may be able to help with the development of software.
-
- Ultimately I would like to be able to run an X server on say the linux machine
- with applications on VAX/VMS & Ultrix hosts, I'm prepared to do some
- 'real' software development to achieve this. (while I'm newish to Unix I am
- a (quite) competent programer in my native OS and can hack the pace of serious
- systems programming.)
-
-
- I probably have all the documentation necessary to work on this,
- I also have access to machines with quite a few different types of ethernet
- cards if this is any help.
-
- I have telnet access to an ultrix DECstation in another dept. (This has
- become less useful since I started using VMS tar/compress etc as I have
- total control of resources on the VAX but limited use of the ultrix machine)
- This may offer a solution, any ideas??
-
- email replies are prefered as I will be away for a few days and may
- miss postings to news.
-
- Thanks in advance for *any* help
-
- p.s. I like Linux, I'm impressed with what I've seen so far,
- by the way I didn't have any of the problems with only being able
- to login as root etc.., I used the latest version of the mj-release
- and everything went as smooth as.., great job.
