- By best suggestion is if you don't already know what you're doing, *don't
- try it*. Used to be you could put together an 8086 from random parts and
- it'd work. But the architecture of the '386 and up vary tremendously from
- one manufacturer to another. Even if everything is up to specs, it may
- still not work properly. Even in house parts for an older '386 won't work
- for newer models (for example the first generation Zenith 386s).

- Find yourself a few issues of the Computer Shopper, flip through them a few
- times. Look for things like assembled systems sans case, keyboard, RAM,
- video card, etc.--they'll usually cost less than complete systems.

- Important: don't buy the hype. You don't need a 50 MHz 486 with 250Mb hard
- disk and 16Mb RAM just for word processing. Likewise, if you plan on doing
- lots of math intensive stuff, a 387 coprocessor for a 16-20 MHz 386 will
- serve you better (and cost less) than a faster CPU without the math chip.
