  12. In honour of Rain Day (July 29th), I am pleased to announce the release of
  13. version 1.0a8 of the PREP Editor.  The instructions for anonymous ftp
  14. follow.  Most notable in the new release is the support for voice
  15. annotation, we would especially be interested in comments on the playback
  16. interface.

  25. This is an archive of the PREP Editor, a collaborative writing environment.
  26. PREP is a Macintosh application, compatible with System 6.0 and higher,
  27. including System 7.
  28.  
  29. The PREP project is funded by the National Science Foundation and Apple
  30. Computer (ATG/ER).  Our goal is to develop a system that encourages and
  31. facilitates collaboration in writing, without imposing requirements on
  32. connectivity and concurrency.  Therefore, PREP requires no central server,
  33. and is not a synchronous "shared-screen" word processor.  PREP provides a
  34. column based interface where related information is linked across columns.
  35. To some degree, PREP provides an unlimited amount of "virtual margins" to
  36. take notes in.

  38. The latest versions of PREP use the Claris XTND technology (provided) to
  39. make it easy to import documents for annotation in PREP (and export them
  40. afterwards with the annoations stored as footnotes).

  42. PREP is available via anonymous ftp on the internet (those instructions
  43. follow).    If you cannot use ftp, please send mail to
  44. <prep-project@andrew.cmu.edu> and we will forward instructions on how you
  45. can get a physical copy in the mail (for a small fee to cover our expenses).

  51. The archives are stored as a "binhex'd self-extracting archive".  It
  52. is available for anonymous ftp via gnome.cs.cmu.edu, and the EXACT
  53. instructions for getting the release package follows:
  54.  
  55. 1) open an anonymous ftp connection to gnome.cs.cmu.edu (128.2.254.185)
  56.    That is, do a "ftp gnome.cs.cmu.edu", and login as "anonymous",
  57.    a password of your userid.
  58.  
  59. 2) As your first ftp command after the login, issue the following:
  60.  
  61.    cd /usr/chandhok/public/prep
  62.  
  63.    !!! IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW STEP 2 EXACTLY, YOU WILL GET AN ERROR !!!

  65. 3) Next, issue the following command (in ascii mode, BTW), and substitute
  66.    the version number for the ??
  67.  
  68.    get prepv??.sea.hqx
  69.    
  70. 4) On your macintosh, use binhex or Stuffit to un-binhex the file.  
  71.    You will end up with an application, which, when double clicked,
  72.    will unpack itself as (at least) two files:
  73.    
  74.    * The Prep Application
  75.    * The documentation in PREP format
  76.  
  77.    The unpacking may result in a release folder containing all the files,
  78.    depending on what version you are retrieving.
