- To the best of my knowledge, EVERY V.22bis modem implements fallback
- to 1200bps operation (V.22 or Bell 212, or both) at the beginning of
- a call or upon a retrain. Note that I'm NOT talking about rate
- renegotiation ala V.32bis. Also note that I'm not aware of any
- v.22bis modems that will automatically initiate a retrain based on
- line conditions, although many have a command for that purpose.

- Again, I'm not talking about falling back during a call, but during
- the initial handshake for backward compatibility. This has been the
- traditional meaning of the word "fallback", although it now seems to
- be more associated with automatic rate changes during a call in
- response to line conditions.
