- I have been reading this group for a while now, trying to get a handle on
- how much trouble I will be in when I try to attach a fax modem to my Unix
- workstation to use for both incoming and outgoing calls and faxes. I have
- seen a lot of ominous sounding notes about how some fax modems have to be
- manually switched between fax or modem mode and how others don't raise
- carrier detect when receiveing a fax. I have also seen a lot of references
- to the Class 1 command set for fax modems, but I haven't been able to find a
- pointer to a description of those commands I could ftp.
-
- I would like a fax/modem which:
-
- 1) Can operate at the highest possible speeds for which some standards
- exist 14.4K for the modem and at least 9600 for the fax (I don't know
- if the 14.4K fax is actually standardized yet).
-
- 2) Automatically detects an incoming fax or incoming data call and
- provides some indication to my computer of which type of call is
- coming in. It needs to raise carrier detect in both cases because the
- Unix world operates very nicely when you can hang an open waiting for
- carrier.
-
- 3) Allows me to call out as well and send it commands to tell it if I am
- sending a fax or originating a data connection.
-
- I know I have a lot of questions here, but I have been having trouble finding
- answers, so I thought I would beg :-).
-
- I have gotten the blurbs from the Intel and Hayes BBS systems about their
- modems, and it seems like they might meet my needs, but I can't tell for
- sure. If I don't hear anything from the net, I suppose I can call their
- customer service folks and maybe get the answers I need.
-
- Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.
