- Chances are, this is simply a case of him/her not knowing.
- Unfortunately, many salespeople assume that because manufacturers
- sell separate "Mac" modems and "PC" modems that there is something
- different about the MODEMS -- but there's not (at least, external
- modems, of course). The differences in these "bundles" are the
- cables and the software, NOT the modems. Just about every Hayes
- external modem works equally well on a PC and a Mac, so long as you
- have the right cable (see below for the exception).

-
- Naw. The Mac serial port works fine with the vast majority of
- external modems; the 422 signals, if you connect to only one side of
- them, provide signals that are quite within EIA-232 specs (but might
- not work if you tried to run at high rates over very long distances;
- they should work fine for typical cable lengths). The only
- exception are modems which are "line powered". Actually, when these
- modems are on-hook, they draw power from the serial interface -- and
- they won't work with a Mac, because the Mac doesn't provide enough
- output pins to provide all of the necessary power. The modem you're
- looking at is NOT "line powered", and should work fine with a Mac.
