- I've just received this on a local CDE list. It is important to protest
- these cuts now. (I am sending to IASSIST@PUCC, SOS-DATA@UNCVM1, and
- GOVDOC-L@KENTVM. Please forward other appropriate places; I apologize
- for double (or triple) hits for some of you.)

- Subj: Message from Paul Voss re: Census budget
- A 12 to 18 percent reduction to the Census Bureau's 1993 budget has been
- proposed by Congress.
-
- The effect of this cut could be the cancellation of all releases of long form
- questionnaire data after the issuance of Summary Tape File 4, reductions to
- surveys, continuing evaluations of the 1990 census, and the Census 2000
- research program.
-
- The specific data products that could be cancelled include:
- - Long form questionnaire data by Zip Code area.
- - County-to-County Migration files providing data on intra- and inter-
- state migration streams essential for transportation planning.
- - Map products planned for release in 1993.
- - Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) used by researchers, academicians
- and others to create special tabulation and anlyses of data not
- available through standard computer files.
- - All supplementary and subject reports/computer files.
-
- Expressions of concern may be directed to the leadership of the Senate
- (Hollings, Rudman) and House (Smith, Rogers) Appropriations Subcommittees
- and members from your state.
-
- To be effective, your correspondence must reach the members prior to
- August 14. If you have any questions or comments please call me.
