  16. I don't see how the decision of the librarians to discard the
  17. Congressional Record was in error.  Obviously, the History department
  18. thought that the stupid librarians were throwing out important documents.
  19. Libraries are always running out of room and converting to microform.
  20. Probably, the stack shift never occurred because the documents librarian, who
  21. planned the shift, left the position.

  23. Too many librarians live in fear of discarding the "wrong" book.  Most
  24. college libraries cannot and should not keep everything.  One can always
  25. dream up some possible use for any book that is discarded.  This has to be
  26. balanced off with requiring students to browse through dozens of outdated
  27. and obscure books, in order to find the few vital ones most want.

  29. The true horror is that we cannot purchase needed new reference materials
  30. because of budget conditions.  As our collections age, and few dollars are
  31. available to update materials, students have a harder time finding current
  32. information.  Keeping five or ten or fifteen year old directories can do
  33. more damage than good.  Yes, there are an unlimited number of professors
  34. who may get apoplectic if their "favorite" book disappears from the
  35. library, but is this our prime motivation?

  37. Sorry to get a bit heated about this, but the killer for me was that a
  38. member of the History department was made the temporary Dean of Libraries.
  39. Was s/he a librarian?  If not, would a librarian be made temporary chair
  40. of the History department?
