- I don't see how the decision of the librarians to discard the
- Congressional Record was in error. Obviously, the History department
- thought that the stupid librarians were throwing out important documents.
- Libraries are always running out of room and converting to microform.
- Probably, the stack shift never occurred because the documents librarian, who
- planned the shift, left the position.
-
- Too many librarians live in fear of discarding the "wrong" book. Most
- college libraries cannot and should not keep everything. One can always
- dream up some possible use for any book that is discarded. This has to be
- balanced off with requiring students to browse through dozens of outdated
- and obscure books, in order to find the few vital ones most want.
-
- The true horror is that we cannot purchase needed new reference materials
- because of budget conditions. As our collections age, and few dollars are
- available to update materials, students have a harder time finding current
- information. Keeping five or ten or fifteen year old directories can do
- more damage than good. Yes, there are an unlimited number of professors
- who may get apoplectic if their "favorite" book disappears from the
- library, but is this our prime motivation?
-
- Sorry to get a bit heated about this, but the killer for me was that a
- member of the History department was made the temporary Dean of Libraries.
- Was s/he a librarian? If not, would a librarian be made temporary chair
- of the History department?
