- Regarding the dilemma of Leslie R. as to disposition of a run of Beilstein
-
- From
- Tony Stankus, Science Librarian, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA
-
- 1. The justifications for disposal that our colleague may offer are
- numerous: the work is not intended for a junior college audience;
- the bulk of the material that it contains is available elsewhere
- in an easier-to-use and often updated form; the shelf-space that it
- uses up is likely to be better employed in more current material that
- better matches the mission of the institution.
-
- 2. Disposal is also less complicated than might appear to be the case.
- Post a few messages to e-mail lists announcing the availability of the
- set (CHEM-INFO is the most pertinent. Give and address and cut off date.
- Ask only for reimbursement of shipping expenses. If this does not work,
- then dispose of the set. Beilstein does have a lingering value in a
- relatively small number of graduate level programs in chemistry and in
- certain industrial and pharmaceutical firms. But a truncated run of
- its earliest years has at best historical interest.
