  15. Regarding menu organisation - at Southampton we have opted for
  16. menus which reflect the organisation of the institution. This was
  17. for 2 reasons:
  18.  
  19. a) expediency - it seemed to us that we would enter into
  20. potentially endless discussion/arguement if we tried to develop a
  21. "thematic" menu from scratch. Much easier to borrow structures
  22. which were already set out in the University Calendar and Telephone
  23. Directory.

  25. b) user familiarity - we felt that by using a structure which was
  26. already familiar to our local users, it would make it that little
  27. bit easier for them to use.

  29. In practice, things aren't so simple - a surprising amount of
  30. information is cross-departmental (we address this problem by
  31. cross-referencing). There are also a number of areas which just
  32. don't sit comfortably in our organisational structure (e.g.
  33. Entertainment, sport etc.). This has led to the incorporation of
  34. 'thematic' menu topics as well.

  36. Finally, strict adherence to the institution's organisational
  37. heirarchy may not make the desired impression on the end user.
  38. Currently, we have 'Administration' near the top of our Main Menu,
  39. while 'Student Facilities & Support' (which is not formally
  40. reflected in the institution's organisation lies near the bottom).
  41. I think this is probably passing the wrong impression to our
  42. students who are, after all, are target user group.

  44. Currently, we are planning a menu re-organisation - we will keep
  45. the organisational structure where it seems to help (i.e.
  46. Faculties, Administration, Academic Services) but allow for a more
  47. thematic approach where strict adherence to institution structures
  48. results in  obscure or convoluted menu entries.
