- This is my first experience with this mailing list,
- and it has been, well, exhilirating.
-
- I would like to add one observation. I hope it is
- not irrelevant.
-
- > .......................People with eyes open realize this is just an
- >eco-terrorist stunt on the order of Earth First! terrorist tactics.
-
- >From my perspective, this, also, is an uninformed
- position to take. The corporate media chooses to
- portray EarthFirst! as a bunch of wide-eyed radical
- terrorists. The subtext: most environmentalists
- are close behind on a slippery slope. The EarthFirst!ers
- that I have met fit quite a different mold.
-
- I should add that my experience might be different
- from people in the rest of the country, since the
- Northern California chapter of EF! has broken with
- the rest of the organization by actively espousing
- principles of nonviolence. Yet, I think this probably
- makes little difference.
-
- True, the EF! emphasis is not necessarily on activities like
- public hearings, legal actions, and conferences. There is,
- however, a tendency toward being informed about
- issues and technicalities. And, judging from the
- EF!ers that I have met, the first requisite for membership
- seems to be the ability to "talk a good game"--
- then MAYBE act upon those words. What is most
- threatening about EarthFirst! is not their actions
- but their ethic. "Deep ecology", even with all the
- associated tautologies, is directly counter to
- whatever the power elite might be mulling over.
-
- It may be easy for some to sit in their armchairs
- and criticize people willing to chain themselves
- to bulldozers or blockade roads with their bodies,
- but I am not one of them, whether they are protecting
- a burial ground or a threatened bit of biodiversity.
-
- Which is more lasting, Mr. Coffman, words or deeds?
- Words alone cannot kill.
-
- Open eyes are good tools for open minds.
