  11. This is my first experience with this mailing list,
  12. and it has been, well, exhilirating.

  14. I would like to add one observation.  I hope it is
  15. not irrelevant.

  24. are close behind on a slippery slope.  The EarthFirst!ers
  25. that I have met fit quite a different mold.

  27. I should add that my experience might be different
  28. from people in the rest of the country, since the
  29. Northern California chapter of EF! has broken with
  30. the rest of the organization by actively espousing
  31. principles of nonviolence.  Yet, I think this probably
  32. makes little difference.

  34. True, the EF! emphasis is not necessarily on activities like
  35. public hearings, legal actions, and conferences.  There is,
  36. however, a tendency toward being informed about
  37. issues and technicalities.  And, judging from the
  38. EF!ers that I have met, the first requisite for membership
  39. seems to be the ability to "talk a good game"--
  40. then MAYBE act upon those words.  What is most
  41. threatening about EarthFirst! is not their actions
  42. but their ethic.  "Deep ecology", even with all the
  43. associated tautologies, is directly counter to
  44. whatever the power elite might be mulling over.

  46. It may be easy for some to sit in their armchairs
  47. and criticize people willing to chain themselves
  48. to bulldozers or blockade roads with their bodies,
  49. but I am not one of them, whether they are protecting
  50. a burial ground or a threatened bit of biodiversity.

  53. Words alone cannot kill.
