  14.     There is also a gopher client/server pair with linking capability
  15. This is available from from me. The only client currently supporting this
  16. is the Unix XClient, however the Unix curses client will be ready very soon.
  17. Both the client and server will be uploaded to boombox in the near future
  18. (when I get some time to organize things). Until then, if you want more

  25. Gopher is a platform independent information handling and retrevial system.
  26. Gopher is a server/client system.

  28. I.I The server
  29.  
  30. The server resides on a networked computer and handles all requests
  31. from any client on another computer. The server located at the
  32. University of Victoria is based on the v1.01 release of the Unix server. An
  33. enhancement has been made by David Manning (dmanning@nero.UVic.CA) to
  34. provide graphics support (GIF is the only graphics protocal currently
  35. implemented).

  37. There is a Mac-based server available. However, there are none currently
  38. operating within the University of Victoria.

  40. I.II The client
  41.  
  42. The client is a program that connects to the server and sends and receives
  43. information based on user requests. There are currently clients available
  44. for all major platforms, including Mac, IBM, NeXT, Sun/Unix and VMS. The
  45. Sun/Unix client is available for a curses environment and an X window
  46. environment. The Sun/Unix clients at the University are based on the
  47. v1.01 release of the curses client and the v1.1 release of the X window
  48. client. Several enhancements have been made by David Manning and
  49. Michael Mansell (mmansell@nero.UVic.CA) to the X window client. These
  50. enhancements provide graphics support (GIF only) and cross-referencing.
  51. A completely new client is being written to interact with the multimedia
  52. hypertext project currently in progress. This client is command-line
  53. driven to provide a silent and automatic mechanism to access the gopher
  54. databases.
