-
- During the showdown at sea, we were busy digging in and acquiring whatever
- castoffs we could to try to secure or base. We fixed up four old AAA's for
- defense. An electronics hack manufactured some couplings so that the
- Corsairs and Starfighters could be loaded with Russian ordinance, but so far
- they didn't work all that reliably, and the Russian ordinance we had
- available wasn't all that much better than the old US stuff. When the
- Rooskies backed down, we knew it was only the quiet tension before the storm.
- I ordered that all planes be maintained combat ready, and that two F-104's
- were prepped for interception at all times.
-
- Then the storm broke and the land war was on...
-
- "Boss, you've gotta let us bug. The Russian blitzkrieg is halfway through,
- and we are not set up to fight a war."
-
- "No, but you are in an ideal position for a quick response attack. I'm
- getting some assets into the area. Keep the planes hot, son. I may wake you
- up some night with a combat mission."
-
- "Boss, you gotta be kidding me. I.."
-
- "Son, be quiet. Boss out."
-
- You know what shook me more that having to fly first generation planes
- against the Russians? How old boss sounded just then.

- MISSION OBJECTIVE
- ..underline
- .body
- The promised call came a few weeks later. All of us sleeping in the hanger
- rooms were startled awake by the alert buzzer on my satellite comm.
-
- "What's up, Boss?"
-
- "A convoy of munitions and possibly some elements of nerve gas are being
- smuggled into Zhytomyr to Russian sympathizers. Load up and take them out.
- Be sure to ID your targets, though. We have word that they will be using a
- caravan of war orphans as cover. Assets on the ground will ID the orphans as
- friendlies. Watch out for patrols. We haven't got a new schedule yet, but
- we don't expect too much. Good luck."
-
- "Ok, Boss. But you've got to get us some modern ordinance if you plan on
- using us much longer."
-
- "Already in the works, son. Out."
-
- The carrier snapped off in a very quiet room. "All right, guys. No drill.
- Get two A-7's loaded with 500lb. bombs and a pair of 9B's on the wings.
- Popcorn, hop in the MiG-21 and provide Bear and me with air cover It should
- be hot on the pad. We've got 15 minutes, so hustle!" The ground crew
- scrambled. "Bear, once we cross the ridge, we will drop low to avoid any
- patrols we can. Popcorn will help us out as he can, but these Corsairs are
- not dogfighters. Try to keep the speed and altitude low."
-
- "I know, Boss. See 'ya up there."

- MISSION SUCCESS

-
- I hopped down from the Corsair, thinking for the hundredth time how it looked
- like a surprised dwarf. Sleepy, Dopey, and Oopsie. Right.
-
- I met Bear and Popcorn heading for a nice cold shower.
-
- "Good job, guys. Those MiGs didn't give us too much trouble, and the AAA
- traveling with the trucks got left behind. All and all a good first try."
-
- They grinned dopey, sleepy grins. Of course. "Bear, watch your envelope,
- when you're fighting more maneuverable aircraft you..."

- MISSION FAILURE

- C'MON. This mission was not that difficult. Only a few trucks to take out
- guarded by a some wimpy AAA's...it was a milk run. Those MiGs should not have
- been too much trouble.
