  1. You ask a lot of questions! :-)  Concerning compiler on msdos, I have 
  2. used the djgpp port of GNU CC from oak.oakland.edu:/pub/msdos/djgpp. 
  3. It comes with gnu-make, which makes it trivial to go to/from unix 
  4. platform. A few hacks were needed to compile the tiff package on dos. 
  5. But they are all easy!
