  39. 1.  About StepUp'98
  40. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  41.  
  42. StepUp'98 is a set of powerful utilities designed to extend the
  43. Windows user interface. Once installed, this program makes available
  44. a wide variety of additional commands that are available via the menus
  45. and Taskbar, enabling you to work quickly and easily. 
  46.  
  47. StepUp'98 was selected as a Pick of the Week at the WinUser forum on
  48. CompuServe. The previous version, StepUp'96, was featured in Windows
  49. Magazine, Superior Shareware section. StepUp'96 was also rated "four
  50. stars" (out of five) by Ziff-Devis Interactive.

  52. Features of StepUp'98 include:

  54. o StepUp Menu, accessible from the context menu and/or taskbar,
  55.   containing a set of commands to process files or folders, open new
  56.   browsing windows, run files, access items on the Internet, etc.
  57.  
  58. o Folder Navigator, accessible from the context menu and/or taskbar,
  59.   allowing you to quickly go to the folder you recently visited.
  60.  
  61. o Menu Designer, which you can use to add new commands to StepUp
  62.   Menu, modify its existing commands to make them better suit your
  63.   needs, move menu items between submenus, etc.
  64.  
  65. o File Handler, offering you an alternative way to manage your files
  66.   and folders.  It makes you able, for example, rename a large group
  67.   of files by a mask in a single step; split a large file across
  68.   multiple diskettes; change the time stamp of a group of files, make 
  69.   a list of files to further print it out, etc.
  70.  
  71. o Taskbar Icons, offering you quick access to the items on the
  72.   Desktop when it's covered by many windows; the Fast Exit commands;
  73.   quick control of the AutoRun CD-ROM feature, and more.
  74.  
  75. o StepUp Control Panel, which you can use to control various
  76.   settings of StepUp'98 and Windows, such as the thickness of the
  77.   window borders, the boot options for Windows 95, history and
  78.   uninstaller lists, etc.

  80. o Context-sensitive Help provides a complete user's guide for StepUp'98.
  81.   Also included an automatic Setup utility, allowing you to painlessly
  82.   install and uninstall StepUp'98.

  84. o StepUp'98 may be used both on a single machine and on a network.
  85.   Each user can configure and use StepUp'98 independently on the
  86.   others.  Also included a policy template file for StepUp'98,
  87.   which may be used by system administrators to restrict most of its

  103. 2. System requirements
  104. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  105.  
  106. StepUp'98 is designed for the operating systems Windows 95, 98 and 
  107. Windows NT (version 4.0 or higher).  1 MB (one megabyte) of free space
  108. on your hard disk is required to install StepUp'98.  There are no
  109. special requirements or recommendations except the obvious one: the
  110. better processor and more RAM your computer has the better StepUp'98
  111. will perform.

  113. NOTE: throughout StepUp'98 documentation, "Windows" is used to
  114.   refer to Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0.  In those few instances
  115.   where the operation of StepUp'98 under these operating systems
  116.   differ, an explicit operating system name is used.
  117.  
  118. StepUp'98 CANNOT be installed and used under the following
  119. operating systems:
  120.  
  121. - Windows 3.1/3.11, even if Win32s is installed
  122. - Windows for Workgroups 3.11, even if Win32s is installed.
  123. - Windows NT all versions prior to 4.0.

  126. 2. Installing and uninstalling StepUp'98
  127. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  129. StepUp'98 comes with a Setup utility, which allows you to both
  130. install and uninstall StepUp'98.
  131.  
  132. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply copy StepUp'98 files onto
  133.    your hard disk to install it.  You MUST run Setup.exe to
  134.    configure your system and enable all components of StepUp'98.
  135.  
  136. To install StepUp'98:
  137. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  138. a) If you have obtained StepUp'98 as a compressed file, uncompress
  139.    the file into a temporary folder on a hard disk, or on a floppy
  140.    diskette.
  141.    
  142. b) Open the folder containing the uncompressed set of StepUp'98
  143.    files and double-click on "Setup" (or "Setup.exe").
  144.    
  145.    NOTE: if a previous version of StepUp'98 already exists on the
  146.    disk, Setup may prompt you to restart Windows before the new
  147.    version may be installed over the existing one.
  148.    
  149. c) The Setup utility will suggest you the folder in which to install
  150.    StepUp'98.  You may accept the suggestion or choose other
  151.    location for StepUp'98 files.  You can also specify whether to
  152.    add StepUp'98 items to Start Menu and whether to create a
  153.    Desktop folder for StepUp'98 components.
  154.  
  155. d) The Setup utility will copy the files into the specified folder and
  156.    configure Windows for using StepUp'98.
  157.    
  158. e) At the end of the installation procedure Setup prompts you to
  159.    enter your name and a registration code.  If you have purchased a
  160.    license for continued use of StepUp'98 and received your
  161.    Registration Code, you may enter it at that time, and the
  162.    evaluation version of StepUp'98 will be converted into the
  163.    registered one.  Otherwise, you may skip entering the
  164.    registration code and StepUp'98 will operate in the evaluation
  165.    mode.

  167. f) After the installation is complete, you may delete the files from
  168.    the temporary folder, from which you were installing StepUp'98.
  169.  
  170. NOTE: If you had a previous version of StepUp'98 already installed
  171.    on the computer, you may wish to review the updated menu file
  172.    (installed as "Copy of StepUp.mnu"), and include its updated
  173.    commands into the active menu file(s) you were using before.  The
  174.    easiest way to do this is to open the active menu file with Menu
  175.    Designer, use its "File - Import" command to import the entire
  176.    file "Copy of StepUp.mnu", and then arrange the updated commands
  177.    the way you want them to appear in the StepUp menu.

  179.    If you used System Policies provided by a previous version of
  180.    StepUp'98, you may also need to update the active template file
  181.    with the information contained in the updated StepUp.ADM file.

  183. To uninstall StepUp'98
  184. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  185.  
  186. NOTE: it is NOT sufficient to simply delete the files of StepUp'98
  187.    to completely uninstall it.  Please follow the procedure described
  188.    below to uninstall StepUp'98 and clean up your system
  189.    configuration:
  190.  
  191. a) Open Control Panel and then open the "Add/remove programs" item.
  192.    
  193. b) In the list of products which can be uninstalled find the line
  194.    "StepUp'98" and double-click it.
  195.    
  196. c) The "Uninstalling StepUp'98" dialog box will appear prompting you
  197.    to confirm that you want to uninstall StepUp'98.  You may choose
  198.    to deactivate all StepUp'98 components, delete its application
  199.    files, delete user files related to StepUp'98, and/or reset
  200.    StepUp'98 settings.  Click on the Help button in the dialog box
  201.    for more information on these options.
  202.    
  203. d) After the uninstalling procedure is complete, you may need to go
  204.    to the folder where StepUp'98 files were installed and delete
  205.    the remaining files.  If you are running Windows NT, you may need
  206.    to logoff and then log back on before Windows permits you to
  207.    delete these files.

  211. 4. This is TRY BEFORE YOU BUY software
  212. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  214. This is NOT freeware or public domain software.  This is software
  215. which you can "try before you buy".
  216.  
  217. You may install the program in your system and use it for an
  218. evaluation period of up to 14 days.  After that time, you are
  219. required to purchase a license for continued use of the software or
  220. else stop using it.  You may freely copy and distribute evaluation
  221. copies of StepUp'98 provided that all conditions specified in the
  222. distribution license are satisfied (please see the distribution 
  223. license in the VENDINFO.DIZ file.)

  225. What's the difference between Evaluation and Licensed versions?
  226.  
  227. There is NO functional difference between the evaluation and
  228. licensed versions of this software (except for the registration
  229. reminders, displayed by the evaluation version after the evaluation
  230. period has ended).  Actually, it's the same program: you may convert
  231. an evaluation copy into a registered copy by entering your name and
  232. a valid registration code.  Similarly, a registered copy of the
  233. program may be unregistered by deleting the registration code or
  234. by just copying the program to another computer.

  236. Evaluation copies of our products are 100% fully functional.  We
  237. make them this way so you can have a real look at them to decide
  238. whether or not they fit your needs.  Please understand that if you
  239. fail to register, and continue to use StepUp'98 beyond the
  240. evaluation period without paying for it, don't expect the program to
  241. maintain its original functionality: some features may become
  242. disabled.  If you need more time to decide whether you want to keep
  243. the program, we'll give you an opportunity to extend the evaluation
  244. period.  However, we cannot afford to let you use the program
  245. without compensation.  In addition, it is unfair to our customers
  246. who do register to use the program.  We appreciate your
  247. understanding of this policy.

  270. How to purchase a license for use of StepUp'98

  273. StepUp'98 is licensed on the 'per-user', not a 'per-computer'
  274. basis.  This means that you may purchase a single individual license
  275. and use StepUp'98 on more than one computer (for example, a
  276. desktop system and a notebook), provided that you are the only user
  277. of those computers and there is no possibility to use the Registered
  278. Copy of StepUp'98 by anybody else.
  279.  
  280. On the other hand, if more than one person uses a computer, every
  281. such user must purchase an individual license for continued use of
  282. the software, or a site license for the total number of users
  283. accessing the computer must be obtained.
