  5. This file  contains important information  and helpful
  6. details  about Sidekick  95 Deluxe.  Please read  this
  7. file carefully.
  8.  
  9. NOTE:  You should  also be  sure to  read the separate
  10. README files for Sidekick 95 and Dashboard 95. To read
  11. the  Sidekick 95  readme  file,  open the  Start Menu,
  12. Programs, Sidekick 95 Deluxe,  and choose the SKREADME
  13. item. To read the Dashboard  95 readme, open the Start
  14. Menu,  Programs, Dashboard  95, and  choose the README
  15. item.

  25. Colour
  26. ------
  27. For best  results, be sure your  system uses the video
  28. driver  called High  Colour (16-bit).  If you  need to
  29. change video drivers, right  click-on your Desktop and
  30. choose Properties. Select the  Settings tab and choose
  31. the  High  Colour  (16-bit)  option  from  the  Colour
  32. Palette drop-down menu.
  33.  
  34. Dell S3 video
  35. -------------
  36. On Dell  computers equipped with the  S3 video card in
  37. 16-bit colour, some screen  flicker occurs. If this is
  38. a problem, try a different  colour palette. Select the
  39. Settings tab  and choose a different  palette from the
  40. Colour Palette drop-down menu.
  41.  
  42. CD-ROM drive performance
  43. ------------------------
  44. To  obtain  good  performance  with  the  videos,  the
  45. Windows 95 CD-ROM properties must be set correctly. To
  46. reach the CD-ROM properties dialog box, right-click My
  47. Computer and choose  Properties. Click the Performance
  48. tab, and then click the  File System button. Click the
  49. CD-ROM tab.  Be sure the "Supplemental  cache size" is
  50. set  to Large.  Then check  that the  "Optimise access
  51. pattern for" setting is correct for your CD-ROM drive;
  52. click the down-arrow and  choose the appropriate drive
  53. type from the list (the Deluxe videos require at least
  54. a double-speed drive).
  55.  
  56. 8-Mb computers
  57. --------------
  58. If  your  computer  has  8   Mb  of  memory,  you  may
  59. experience  some  slow  response  or  uneven  movement
  60. during the videos. The reason is that Windows 95 takes
  61. over essentially  all of the  8 Mb of  memory, leaving
  62. none  available  for   smoothing  the  video  playback
  63. process through buffering. The solution is to add more
  64. memory to your computer.
  65.  
  66. Shared CD-ROM drives
  67. --------------------
  68. You may  need to disable sharing  of your CD-ROM drive
  69. to run the Deluxe shell.
  70.  
  71. Using the Electronic Documentation
  72. ----------------------------------
  73. To read the electronic documentation by clicking it in
  74. the  Sidekick 95  Deluxe  menu,  you must  install the
  75. version of Adobe Acrobat included with Deluxe (version
  76. 2.1).  If you  have an  earlier version  of Acrobat on
  77. your system, you may see an error message when you try
  78. to open the electronic documentation from Sidekick. If
  79. you see this message, run the Deluxe shell, and choose
  80. the option to install  the electronic documentation in
  81. the Sidekick Extras panel.

  83. 2. Troubleshooting Multimedia Problems
  84. ======================================
  85. NOTE: QuickTime for Windows installs a file named Read
  86. Me which  you will find in  your QuickTime for Windows
  87. program group. Refer to this file, and the information
  88. below,  if you  have  any  questions or  problems with
  89. video  in the  multimedia presentations.  To read this
  90. file,  click Start,  Programs, QuickTime  for Windows,
  91. and choose  Read Me. Note,  however, that some  of the
  92. information in this file may not apply to Windows 95.

  94. Audio Problems
  95. ==============
  96. There's no sound, or the sound plays too quietly.
  97. -------------------------------------------------
  98. Your speaker volume setting may  be too low. Click the
  99. speaker icon in your Windows 95 System Tray to see the
  100. Volume Control.  Drag the slider up  or down as needed
  101. to adjust the volume. You  may also need to adjust the
  102. volume controls on your computer's speakers.
  103.  
  104. Make sure your sound card is installed properly.
  105.  
  106. The sound is distorted.
  107. -----------------------
  108. Your speaker  batteries may be  low, or your  speakers
  109. may be set  to a volume level that  is too high. Click
  110. the speaker icon in your Windows 95 System Tray to see
  111. the  Volume Control.  Drag the  slider up  or down  as
  112. needed  to  adjust  the   volume.  Adjust  the  volume
  113. controls  on your  computer's speakers  as needed. Try
  114. experimenting with  different volume, treble,  or bass
  115. levels to correct the distortion.

  117. Make sure  your sound card  is installed properly.  If
  118. your  sound  card  software  has  level  settings  for
  119. multiple  sound  sources,  be  sure  to  turn down all
  120. channels except the one controlling the CD volume.
  121.  
  122. The sound is not synchronised with the video.
  123. ---------------------------------------------
  124. The  movie's  data  rate  may  be  too  high  for your
  125. machine. Your  system may need a  faster CD-ROM drive,
  126. hard  drive controller  card,  video  card, or  CPU to
  127. handle the video data rate.
  128.  
  129. Video Problems
  130. ==============
  131. You  may  not  have  enough  memory  or  other  system
  132. resources available. Close  all other applications and
  133. try  the  video  again.  Refer  to  the  QuickTime for
  134. Windows  Read  Me  file,  found  in  the QuickTime for
  135. Windows program group.
  136.  
  137. Other Problems
  138. ==============
  139. Your computer does not acknowledge the presence of the
  140. CD-ROM drive.
  141. ------------------------------------------------------
  142. Make sure that the CD-ROM  drive is plugged in, turned
  143. on,  and  properly  connected  to  your  computer.  If
  144. necessary,  open the  Control  Panel  and use  Add New
  145. Hardware  to  have  Windows  95  recognise  the CD-ROM
  146. drive.
  147.  
  148. You receive out-of-memory errors.
  149. ---------------------------------
  150. You  may not  have the  required 8  MB of  RAM (Random
  151. Access Memory)  to run Sidekick Deluxe.  Close as many
  152. other  applications  as  you  can  to  free up memory.
  153. Restarting Windows also may free up some memory.
  154.  
  155. Other Vendors' Drivers
  156. ======================
  157. Sidekick 95  Deluxe depends on  many different drivers
  158. from many different vendors. Older versions of drivers
  159. may cause  unexpected results. Make sure  you have the
  160. latest versions  of drivers for  your audio and  video
  161. cards  to  ensure  that  Sidekick  95 Deluxe functions
  162. properly. If you experience problems that appear to be
  163. driver-related,  contact the  driver manufacturer  and
  164. obtain  the  latest  version  of  that  manufacturer's
  165. drivers.
