  22. 1. Installation
  23. ----------------
  24.  
  25.  Sidekick requires a minimum of 5 MB of hard disk space
  26.  to install, 1 MB of which must be on the same drive as
  27.  your Windows directory, and a 386 processor or higher.
  28.  After installation, however, Sidekick itself uses only
  29.  3 MB of hard disk space  and requires a minimum of 500
  30.  KB free disk space for working with data files.
  31.  
  32.  NOTE: If you are upgrading  from a previous version of
  33.  Sidekick, make sure you read  Section 5 of this README
  34.  file: "Upgrading from a previous version of SKW."
  35.  
  36.  On some  older machines, the  available disk space  is
  37.  inaccurately reported to  the installation program. If
  38.  you have less than 10  MB of available disk space, and
  39.  the  program either  will not  install or  the install
  40.  unpack is  aborted for no apparent  reason, make 10 MB
  41.  of hard disk space available and install again.
  42.  
  43.  Install will  ask for your initials  (up to 4 letters)
  44.  to  create your  default calendar  name. Install  then
  45.  creates:
  46.  
  47. o a directory called 'SKW2' on the C:drive (or whatever
  48.   directory and drive you specified in the Install
  49.   screen) and copies the program files into that
  50.   directory.
  51. o a directory under 'SKW2' called 'DATA', which
  52.   contains various data files used by Sidekick.
  53. o a directory under 'SKW2' called 'USERDATA',which will
  54.   contain your personal Cardfile, Calendar and Notes
  55.   data files.
  56. o a SIDEKICK.INI file in your computer's Windows
  57.   director
  58. o a Sidekick for Windows program group in your Program
  59. Manager
  60.  
  61.  To install Sidekick for Windows:
  62.   1. Start Windows.
  63.   2. Choose File|Run from the Program Manager.
  64.   3. Place the Sidekick disk in the appropriate disk
  65.      drive.
  66.   4. Type A:INSTALL (or B:INSTALL if you're using
  67.      Drive B) and choose OK.
  68.   5. Follow the directions on the screen.
  69.   6. To start Sidekick, open the Sidekick for Windows
  70.      group in Program Manager and double-click the
  71.      Sidekick icon.
  72.  
  73. Note:
  74. The install  looks for the SIDEKICK.INI  on your system
  75. to  determine if  a copy  of Sidekick  for Windows  was
  76. already  installed. If  you are  reinstalling Sidekick,
  77. you may want to back  up any personal data files you've
  78. created in the Sidekick 'USERDATA' directory.

  120. 3. Upgrading from a previous version of Sidekick
  121. -------------------------------------------------------
  122.  
  123.  Make  sure to  close Sidekick  1.x and  the Quick Menu
  124.  before  installing version  2.0. To  remove the  Quick
  125.  Menu, choose the Remove command from its menu.
  126.  
  127.  Users  of previous  versions of  Sidekick should  note
  128.  that,  by default,  Sidekick 2.0  installs into  a new
  129.  directory named 'SKW2'. Also,  personal data files are
  130.  no longer kept in the  same directory as other program
  131.  data. All  new user files for  the Cardfile, Calendar,
  132.  and Notes  are installed to  a directory under  'SKW2'
  133.  called 'USERDATA'.
  134.  
  135.  The   Sidekick   installation   program  automatically
  136.  detects whether or not you  have a previous version of
  137.  the program installed. If you have a previous version,
  138.  and you  have installed Sidekick 2.0  into the default
  139.  directory  'SKW2', none  of  the  files in  your 'SKW'
  140.  directory will  be overwritten. However,  Sidekick 2.0
  141.  will not open  your old data files the  first time you
  142.  run it. To  use your existing data, open  each of your
  143.  calendars, cardfiles, and  notefilesin 'SKW\DATA', and
  144.  save  them into  your 'SKW2\USERDATA'  directory. When
  145.  you  open the  files, Sidekick  automatically converts
  146.  them to the Sidekick 2.0 format.
  147.  
  148.  When  Sidekick  2.0  opens  your  version 1.x calendar
  149.  files for the first time, it will convert the calendar
  150.  to the new format, and save  a copy of the version 1.x
  151.  calendar under the extension .SKB. Similarly, Sidekick
  152.  2.0 converts your 1.x cardfiles  to the new format and
  153.  saves a  backup copy with  the extension .SK1.  In the
  154.  Calendar conversion process, to ensure data integrity,
  155.  any  inconsistencies detected  in your  files will  be
  156.  corrected for  you, which may in  some cases result in
  157.  loss of some Calendar activities.
  158.  
  159.  If there  is an error  in opening the  old data files,
  160.  you may  want to refer  to your original  Sidekick 1.x
  161.  files for comparison. In  that case, use the procedure
  162.  below to run Sidekick 1.x.
  163.  
  164.  Note:  For  a  complete  list  of  files included with
  165.  Sidekick and  their use refer  to online Help.  Choose
  166.  Help|Search  from within  Sidekick and  search for the
  167.  keyword "Files."
  168.  
  169.   1.  Close Sidekick and the Quick Menu.
  170.  
  171.   2.  Using the Notepad, open the file SIDEKICK.INI in the WINDOWS
  172.       directory.
  173.  
  174.   3.  Insert a semicolon in front of the line containing the text
  175.       "DATA=C:\SKW2\DATA". Add a line below it that reads
  176.       "DATA=C:\SKW\DATA".
  177.  
  178.   4.  Save the file and close the Notepad.
  179.  
  180.   5.  Open the File Manager. Navigate to the SKW directory (or
  181.       wherever you installed Sidekick 1.x).
  182.  
  183.   6.  Double-click the file SIDEKICK.EXE. Sidekick 1.x launches.
  184.  
  185.   7.  Sidekick 1.x may try to open the files that have now been
  186.       converted to Sidekick 2.0 format. Click OK if Sidekick
  187.       tells you that the various files are not valid files.
  188.  
  189.   8.  Open your original Sidekick 1.x files in the SKW\DATA
  190.       directory.
  191.  
  192.   9.  Write down any data that did not get correctly transferred
  193.       into your Sidekick 2.0 data files.
  194.  
  195.  10.  Close Sidekick 1.x without saving.
  196.  
  197.  11.  Using the Notepad, open the file SIDEKICK.INI in the
  198.       WINDOWS directory.
  199.  
  200.  12.  Remove the semicolon in front of the line
  201.       ";DATA=C:\SKW2\DATA". Remove the line that reads
  202.       "DATA=C:\SKW\DATA".
  203.  
  204.  13.  Save the file and close the Notepad.
  205.  
  206.  14.  Open Sidekick 2.0 as normal, and make sure to open the 2.0
  207.       versions of your files if necessary.
  208.  
  209.  15.  Enter the changes you noted from your 1.x files.
  210.  
  211.  16.  Choose File|Save All, and close Sidekick.
  212.  
  213.  * Installing into your old SKW directory
  214.  
  215.   If you choose to install Sidekick 2.0 into your 'SKW'
  216.   directory,   overwriting   your   previous   copy  of
  217.   Sidekick,  any personal  files (cardfiles, calendars,
  218.   and notes)  located in the 'DATA'  directory will not
  219.   be affected by the install. However, program-specific
  220.   data  files,  such  as  SpeedBar  settings  and print
  221.   templates cannot  be retained due  to changes to  the
  222.   files.
  223.  
  224.   To install into your 'SKW' directory, over a previous
  225.   version of Sidekick:
  226.  
  227. 1.  Install  Sidekick.  (See  Section  1  for  steps to
  228. follow, but  modify the install location  to your 'SKW'
  229. directory.)
  230.  
  231. 2. After installation, if  you want to consolidate your
  232. data in the same directory, move your existing personal
  233. data files from the 'DATA' directory into 'USERDATA'.
  234.  
  235. Personal files may include any of the following:
  236.  
  237. - Cardfiles having the extension .SDB and .TDB
  238. - Notes files with the extension .FDR, .HDR, and .SKN
  239. - Calendar files beginning with your initials and having
  240.   the extension .SKW
  241. - Other files not stamped with the same date and time as
  242.   Sidekick
  243.  
  244. 3. Delete  the old cardfile  print template files  from
  245.   the DATA directory:
  246.  
  247.        SKWLBPRM.SKW
  248.        SKWPHPRM.SKW
  249.  
  250. Deleting files is described in your Windows or
  251. operating system manual.
  252.  
  253.  
  254. 4. Changing the working directory
  255. ----------------------------------
  256.  
  257. By default C:\SKW2 is set  as the working directory for
  258. Sidekick 2.0 and the  Import and Export tools. However,
  259. you  can  change  the  working  directory  to  the same
  260. location as  your data files  (in C:\SKW2\USERDATA), or
  261. to any other directory you want.
  262.  
  263.  To  change the  working directory  to the  location of
  264.  your  data  files,  follow  the  instructions outlined
  265.  below:
  266.  
  267.   1. Switch to Program Manager.
  268.   2. Select the icon labeled "Sidekick."
  269.   3. Choose File|Properties from the Program Manager.
  270.   4. Change the working directory in the Properties
  271.      dialog box from C:\SKW2 to C:\SKW2\USERDATA (or to
  272.      the USERDATA directory of the path you specified
  273.      during installation).
  274.  
  275.  You can change the  working directories for the Import
  276.  and  Export  tools  in  a  similar  manner as outlined
  277.  above.

  280. 5. Sample files
  281. ----------------
  282.  The following sample files are included with Sidekick:

  311. 6. Using Sidekick with PC Tools and Norton Desktop
  312.    for Windows
  313.   ------------------------------------------------
  314.  
  315.  With some configurations of PC Tools for Windows, when
  316.  you switch between desktops  while Sidekick is open, a
  317.  "docked"  SpeedBar  or  LaunchBar  will  move with the
  318.  active  desktop  independent   of  the  main  Sidekick
  319.  window.
  320.  
  321.  To prevent the SpeedBar  or LaunchBar from moving with
  322.  the active  desktop, you can  change them to  floating
  323.  palettes by dragging them with the mouse, or hide them
  324.  using the Show options on the Sidekick View menu. They
  325.  will then  remain with the  Sidekick window until  the
  326.  next Windows session.
  327.  
  328.  When installing Sidekick under Norton Desktop 2.0, you
  329.  may  receive  error  messages  when  the  Installation
  330.  program attempts to  automatically create the Sidekick
  331.  icons. Ignore  the error messages  and Sidekick should
  332.  be installed. You can then create the icons manually.
  333.  
  334.  
  335. 7. Printing
  336. -------------
  337.  
  338.  When using  a pre-defined template  to print cardfiles
  339.  or calendars,  you may need  to adjust the  template's
  340.  margins  slightly  for   your  specific  printer.  For
  341.  example,  increasing  the  top  margin  slightly,  and
  342.  decreasing the  bottom margin by the  same amount will
  343.  cause the text to print lower on the page.

  345.  
  346. 8. YourWay users upgrading to Sidekick
  347. ----------------------------------------
  348.  
  349.  All cardfile and calendar files created in YourWay are
  350.  compatible  with  Sidekick.   Report  files  are  not.
  351.  Cardfile extensions are now .SDB and the calendar file
  352.  extensions are now .SKW.  YourWay files can be renamed
  353.  to  the correct  extension and  then simply  opened in
  354.  Sidekick.
  355.  
  356.  Installing Sidekick
  357.  
  358. 1. Be  sure you do not  have YourWay or the  Quick Menu
  359. running   when   you   install   Sidekick.  Follow  the
  360. installation instructions.
  361.  
  362.  Renaming YourWay's Cardfiles
  363.  
  364. 1.  Open  the  File   Manager.  Click  on  the  YOURWAY
  365. directory so it is highlighted. (If your data files are
  366. stored elsewhere, click on that directory.)
  367.  
  368. 2. Choose File|Copy.
  369.  
  370. 3.  In  the  Copy  dialog  box, type "C:\YOURWAY\*.YDB"
  371. (don't type the quotes) into the "From:" text box. Type
  372. "C:\SKW2\USERDATA\*.SDB"  into  the   "To:"  text  box.
  373. (Change  the  location  for  the  Sidekick directory if
  374. yours is  located on another  drive or has  a different
  375. name.)  Click OK.  This will  copy and  rename all  the
  376. cardfiles  in   the  YOURWAY  directory   to  the  SKW2
  377. directory.  If  you  do  not  want  to  rename  all the
  378. cardfiles,  select  only  the  ones  to  rename  before
  379. opening the  Copy dialog box. (Ctrl-click  on each file
  380. name to select it.)
  381.  
  382. 4.  Your  cardfiles  are  now  ready  to  be  opened in
  383. Sidekick.  Close the  File Manager  and open  Sidekick.
  384. Choose File|Open in Sidekick's  cardfile to open any of
  385. the renamed cardfiles.
  386.  
  387. Renaming YourWay's Calendar files
  388.  
  389. 1.  Open  the  File   Manager.  Click  on  the  YOURWAY
  390. directory  to highlight  it.  (If  your data  files are
  391. stored elsewhere, click on that directory.)
  392.  
  393. 2. Find all the calendar files. These are all the files
  394. in the YOURWAY directory  that begin with your initials
  395. and have a .YWY  extension. When you installed YourWay,
  396. the program prompted you for up to four initials to aid
  397. in  identifying your  personal files.  For example,  if
  398. your  initials  were  ABC,  YourWay  would have created
  399. ABCTASK.YWY,   ABCDATA.YWY,   ABCMAST.YWY,   and  other
  400. similar files.
  401.  
  402. 3. Highlight  all these calendar files  except one: the
  403. *INIT.YWY. Do not highlight or rename this file.
  404.  
  405. 4. Choose File|Copy.
  406.  
  407. 5. In the  Copy dialog box, the files  that you've just
  408. chosen  should automatically  be listed  in the "From:"
  409. text box. Type  "C:\SKW2\USERDATA\*.SKW" into the "To:"
  410. text box. Click OK.
  411.  
  412. 6.  All  the  calendar  files  are  now in the Sidekick
  413. directory and  are ready to be  used in Sidekick. Close
  414. the File  Manager and open Sidekick.  Open the calendar
  415. file  you  need  in  Sidekick's  calendar  by  choosing
  416. File|Open.
  417.  
  418.      NOTE:   Multi-Day  events   (YourWay  called  them
  419.      Conferences) will have to be edited.
  420.  
  421. Using Sidekick
  422.  
  423. Do not have YourWay and Sidekick open at the same time.
  424.  
  425. IMPORTANT: To ensure that  Sidekick runs correctly, you
  426. should  also  remove  the  following  files  from  your
  427. WINDOWS directory:
  428.  
  429.       MACRODLL.DLL
  430.       MEETINGS.DLL
  431.       MICRDATE.DLL
  432.       MICRFLOA.DLL
  433.       QMHOOKS.DLL
  434.       YWDLGDLL.DLL
  435.       YOURWAY.INI
  436.       CMCLIP.YWY
  437.  
  438.    Once  you  are  certain  you  no  longer need backup
  439.    files, you can delete  the YOURWAY directory and all
  440.    the YourWay files.

  442.  
  443. 9. Uninstalling Sidekick for Windows
  444. -------------------------------------
  445.  
  446.  Before  removing Sidekick  from your  system, you  may
  447.  want to back up any personal data files you've created
  448.  in Sidekick.
  449.  
  450.  To uninstall Sidekick 1.x:
  451.  
  452.   1. Back up any Sidekick  data files you want to keep,
  453.   or  move them  to your  'SKW2' directory,  if you are
  454.   removing Sidekick 1.x to  make room for Sidekick 2.0.
  455.   Make  sure  to  save  your  personal  data files into
  456.   C:\SKW2\USERDATA. Personal  files may include  any of
  457.   the following:
  458.  
  459.   - Cardfiles having the extension .SDB and .TDB
  460.   - Notes files with the extension .FDR, *.HDR,
  461.     and *.SKN
  462.   - Calendar files beginning with your initials and
  463.     having the extension .SKW
  464.   - Other files not stamped with the same date and time
  465.     as Sidekick
  466.  
  467.   2.  Delete  the  C:\SKW  directory  and  all  of  the
  468.   files/directories it contains.
  469.  
  470.   3. If it exists, delete the file CMCLIP.SKW from your
  471.   Windows directory.
  472.  
  473.   4. If  necessary, delete the  Sidekick 1.x and  Quick
  474.   Menu icons from the StartUp program group in Windows.
  475.  
  476.   5.  If you  never registered  your copy  of Sidekick,
  477.   open your WIN.INI file  in your WINDOWS directory and
  478.   remove the line LOAD=C:\SKW\REMIND.EXE.
  479.  
  480.  
  481.  To uninstall Sidekick 2.0:
  482.  
  483.   1. After backing up any  Sidekick data files you want
  484.   to keep, delete the C:\SKW2  directory and all of the
  485.   files/directories it contains.
  486.  
  487.   2.  Delete the  file SIDEKICK.INI  from your  Windows
  488.   directory.
  489.  
  490.   3. If it exists, delete the file CMCLIP.SKW from your
  491.   Windows directory.
  492.  
  493.   4. If  necessary, delete the Sidekick  and Quick Menu
  494.   icons from the StartUp program group in Windows.
  495.  
  496.   5.  If you  never registered  your copy  of Sidekick,
  497.   open your WIN.INI file  in your WINDOWS directory and
  498.   remove the line LOAD=C:\SKW2\REMIND.EXE.
  499.  
  500.   Except for any data files you backed up, Sidekick for
  501.   Windows is now completely removed from your system.
