  2. Network Drivers Installation Notes
  3.

  5.           WINDOWS FOR WORKGROUPS v3.11 AND
  6.             MICROSOFT WINDOWS NETWORKING
  7.  
  8.  
  9. This document describes how to configure the LAN PC card
  10. for use with Windows for Workgroups v3.11 and Microsoft 
  11. Windows Networking. These procedures are also described in 
  12. the EtherLink III LAN PC Card User Guide.
  13.  
  14. This file also describes how to install the 3C589D PC Card 
  15. under WFW 3.11 to allow simultaneous 
  16. NetWare and Microsoft Server Connectivity.
  17.  
  18. If you are going to install the Novell NetWare client in 
  19. addition to the Microsoft Windows networking client, you must 
  20. install the Novell NetWare client first.
  21.  
  22. Microsoft Windows for Workgroups (WFW) v3.11 does not include
  23. internal support for the Plug and Play standard.  Since NDIS 
  24. 3.1 (32 BIT) Drivers operate only in Plug and Play environments,
  25. you cannot operate the LAN PC card with the included 32-bit
  26. driver. To ensure support for Windows for Workgroups v3.11, 
  27. 3Com includes a 16-bit NDIS 2.0 driver. This driver offers full
  28. support for Windows for Workgroups, but may affect system 
  29. performance. To resolve this deficiency with Windows for
  30. Workgroups 3.11, you may want to upgrade your operating system
  31. to Windows 95.  Check with your MIS department or system 
  32. manager before doing this.
  33.  
  34. NOTE: The following instructions assume you have not installed
  35.       any other network adapter in the machine. If networking 
  36.       has already been installed, some of the instructions will
  37.       not apply or appear accurate. Consult with your MIS 
  38.       department for further instructions.
  39.  
  40. Before installing the network driver, you should gather the
  41. following information and have it handy for supplying 
  42. information to the setup dialog boxes:
  43.  
  44.       - Transport used in the Microsoft Windows Network 
  45.         (typically IPX/SPX)
  46.       - The Frame type used by the Microsoft Windows Network
  47.         (typically 802.3)
  48.       - Name of the NT Server domain or Windows 95/WFW 3.11
  49.         Workgroup to which you belong.
  50.       - The latest versions of the Card and Socket Services
  51.         installed on your machine. Check with your PC
  52.         manufacturer if you are not sure.
  53.  
  54. You will need to have the following software components
  55. accessible and ready to use:
  56.  
  57.       - Windows for Workgroups v3.11 installation files (either
  58.         on hard disk, floppy diskettes, or CD)
  59.       - The EtherDisk diskette that came with your LAN PC
  60.         card
  61.  
  62. Installing a New Client
  63.  
  64. 1.  From Windows, open the Network group. Double click on 
  65.     the Network Setup icon to open the Network Setup dialog
  66.     box. If networking has not been installed, you will see 
  67.     nothing in the network drivers window. If it looks like
  68.     networking has been installed, ignore this procedure and
  69.     use Installing an Additional Client, below.
  70.  
  71. 2.  Click on the Networks icon to open the Networks dialog 
  72.     box. At the left edge of the dialog box, you will see 
  73.     three radio buttons, describing the type of network support
  74.     that Windows offers.  If you see the name of another
  75.     network client listed on the bottom of this window, see
  76.     Installing an Additional Client, below.
  77.  
  78. 3.  Select Install Microsoft Windows Network and click OK.
  79.  
  80. 4.  Click Drivers to open the Network Drivers dialog box.
  81.  
  82. 5.  Click Add Adapter to display a list of possible choices for
  83.     adapter. Select Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter and
  84.     click OK.
  85.  
  86. 6.  At the Install Driver prompt, insert the EtherDisk in the
  87.     floppy drive and click OK. Select the 3Com 3C589D EtherLink
  88.     III LAN PC Card and click OK.  You will see the
  89.     following added to the list of network drivers:
  90.  
  91.       3Com EtherLink III LAN PC Card adapter [NDIS2]
  92.  
  93. 7.  Click CLOSE. When the Network Setup Dialog box reopens, it
  94.     will show the 3C589D card in the Network Drivers window.
  95.     Click OK.
  96.  
  97. 8.  Supply the information requested in the Microsoft Windows
  98.     Network Names dialog box. Your MIS department or network
  99.     manager should be able to supply the information you need.
  100.     When the information is complete, click OK. 
  101.  
  102. 9.  The installer will request various disks for installation.
  103.     When finished, you will be asked to reboot the system. You
  104.     will have network access when the system restarts. Refer
  105.     to your Windows Manual for instructions on using Microsoft
  106.     Windows Networking. 
  107.  
  108.  
  109. Installing an Additional Client
  110.  
  111. If there is NetWare (ODI) or other client already installed on
  112. your system, follow this procedure:
  113.  
  114. 1.  From Windows, open the Network group. Double click on the
  115.     Network Setup icon to open the Network Setup dialog box. 
  116.  
  117. 2.  Write down the name of the client listed on the last line of
  118.     the Networks dialog box. (You will need this name later.)
  119.  
  120. 3.  Click Install Microsoft Windows Network. At the bottom of
  121.     the small window under the selection that you just made,
  122.     you will see other selections. Click Other.
  123.  
  124. 4.  Find the name of the client you noted in Step 2, select it,
  125.     and click OK. 
  126.  
  127. 5.  Click Drivers to open the Network Drivers dialog box.
  128.  
  129. 6.  Click Add Adapter to display a list of possible choices for
  130.     adapter. Select Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter and 
  131.     click OK.
  132.  
  133. 7.  At the Install Driver prompt, insert the EtherDisk in the
  134.     floppy drive and click OK. Select the 3Com 3C589D EtherLink
  135.     III LAN PC Card and click OK.  You will see the
  136.     following added to the list of network drivers:
  137.  
  138.     3Com 3C589D EtherLink III LAN PC Card adapter [NDIS2]
  139.  
  140. 8.  Click CLOSE. When the Network Setup Dialog box reopens,
  141.     it will show the 3C589D card in the Network Drivers window.
  142.     Click OK.
  143.  
  144. 9.  A Windows Setup dialogue box will open to alert you to the
  145.     presence of files for the existing client. Select No if you
  146.     want to maintain your access to the other network. Windows
  147.     may ask this question several times, depending on how many
  148.     references to the previous network it finds. Select No
  149.     each time.
  150.  
  151. 10. The installer will request various disks for installation.
  152.     When finished, you will be asked to reboot the system. You
  153.     will have network access when the system restarts. Refer to
  154.     your Windows Manual for instructions on using Microsoft
  155.     Windows Networking.

  157.  
  158. 3C589D Installation under WFW 3.11 to Allow Simultaneous 
  159. NetWare and Microsoft Server Connectivity
  160.  
  161. 1.  Install the 3C589D PC Card and connect it to the network 
  162. as described in Chapter 2.
  163.  
  164. 2.  Boot the PC to DOS without loading Windows 
  165. for Workgroups.
  166.  
  167. 3.  Place the Novell VLM client disk #1 in the floppy 
  168. drive and type A:INSTALL [Enter].
  169.  
  170. 4.  Verify that the information on each line is correct.
  171.  
  172. 5.  In the Driver Selection box, press [Enter] to display 
  173. the list of supported drivers.
  174.  
  175. 6.  At the bottom of the list, select "Other Drivers" 
  176. and press [Enter].
  177.  
  178. 7.  When prompted for a driver disk, put the EtherDisk 
  179. in the floppy drive and hit [Enter].
  180.  
  181. 8.  Select "3Com EtherLink III LAN PC Card Adapter" 
  182. from the displayed list and press [Enter].
  183.  
  184. 9.  Select the frame type by pressing [Enter] and 
  185. choosing the appropriate type from the list.
  186.  
  187. 10.  After the selection is made, press [Enter] again.
  188.  
  189. 11.  Press [F10] to return to the main installation screen.
  190.  
  191. 12.  To install the driver, select line 6 from this screen 
  192. and press [Enter].  Follow the instructions.
  193.  
  194. 13.  When the installer finishes, press [Enter].
  195.  
  196. 14.  Reboot the system and verify the NetWare 
  197. server can be logged into.
  198.  
  199. 15.  Load Windows for Workgroups.
  200.  
  201. 16.  Double-click on the "Network" program 
  202. group from the desktop.
  203.  
  204. 17.  Double-click on "Network Setup".
  205.  
  206. 18.  Click on the "Networks" button.
  207.  
  208. 19. Select the second bullet "Install Microsoft 
  209. Windows Network", and then click OK.
  210.  
  211. 20.  Click on the "Drivers" button.
  212.  
  213. 21.  Click on "Add Adapter".
  214.  
  215. 22.  Select "Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter" 
  216. and click OK.
  217.  
  218. 23.  Insert the EtherDisk in the A: drive, and then 
  219. click OK for the path A:\.
  220.  
  221. 24.  Click OK for the Network Adapter 
  222. "3Com 3C589 EtherLink III PC Card".
  223.  
  224. 25.  On the Network Drivers screen, highlight 
  225. "3Com 3C589 EtherLink III PC Card" and click "Setup...".
  226.  
  227. 26.  In the "Driver Type" box, click on the down arrow, 
  228. select "ODI Driver", and click OK.
  229.  
  230. 27.  The line 3Com 3C589 EtherLink III PC Card 
  231. should now show "[ODI/NDIS3]" at the end of it.  
  232. Additionally, "IPX/SPX Compatible Transport 
  233. with NetBIOS" should be present underneath this line.
  234.  
  235. 28.  On the Network Drivers screen, click Cancel.
  236.  
  237. 29.  Click OK to save these settings.
  238.  
  239. 30.  Feed diskettes as prompted and then 
  240. reboot the PC.
