  7. Overview
  8. --------
  9. The configuration portion of the program allows you to change the
  10. configuration parameters for the adapter to fit the specific environment
  11. in which the adapter is installed.
  12.  
  13. The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and Diagnostic Program is
  14. designed to make sure that the adapter is installed correctly and
  15. functioning properly in your computer.  The basic tests check the
  16. physical components, connectors, and circuitry of the adapter and
  17. require only that the adapter be installed in the computer.  The Echo
  18. tests check the adapter's ability to transmit data on the network and
  19. require that the adapter be connected to a network.

  21. The computer containing the adapter to be configured or tested must be
  22. running DOS only.

  25. Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic
  26. -----------------------------------------
  27. There are two ways to start the program:
  28.  
  29. 1.  From the INSTALL.EXE program, by selecting Configuration and 
  30.     Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
  31.  
  32. 2.  Manually, from the root directory of the EtherDisk diskette, by typing
  33.     the following command:
  34.  
  35.     INSTALL [command keyword] [parameter list]
  36.  
  37.     INSTALL represents the 3Com Configuration and Diagnostic Program name.
  38.     The brackets indicate that the command keyword and parameter list are
  39.     optional.

  41.     INSTALL without any arguments invokes the program in full windows
  42.     mode.

  45.     Command Line Keywords
  46.     ---------------------
  47.     The command keywords and parameters are not case-sensitive, so
  48.     CONFIGURE, configure, and Configure, for example, will all work.

  52.         Configures an adapter using command line configuration parameters

  56. -------------
  57. The adapter can be configured in either full screen windows mode or 
  58. command line mode.

  61.     Full Screen Windows Mode
  62.     ------------------------
  63.     To configure the adapter using full-screen windowing, type:
  64.     
  65.     INSTALL [Enter]. 
  66.     Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
  67.     Then select the Configure Adapter option in the Configuration and
  68.     Diagnostic menu.

  76.         Command syntax:  INSTALL CONFIGURE  [ /AUTO /IOBASE:N /INT:N
  77.                       /TR:N /MODEM:N /OPTIMIZE:N /POWER:N /LINKBEAT:N ]
  78.         Each parameter must be of the structure "/keyword:value" and
  79.         contain no blank spaces.  For example: /iobase:300 /int:3
  80.  
  81.         Command line configuration parameters are used to configure the 
  82.         adapter using only the option settings you specify.  In most cases,
  83.         any combination of parameters can be used.  Therefore, it is 
  84.         possible to modify only a few settings if needed.

  86.         /AUTO
  87.             The /AUTO parameter configures the adapter automatically based
  88.             on the software's best estimate using interpreted system 
  89.             information.

  124. Diagnostic
  125. ----------
  126.     Full Screen Windows Mode
  127.     ------------------------
  128.     The diagnostic tests are only available in full-screen mode.
  129.     To run the diagnostic tests, type:
  130.  
  131.     INSTALL [Enter]. 
  132.     Select Configuration and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
  133.     Then select Diagnostic Tests option in the Configuration and
  134.     Diagnostic menu.

  139. If the adapter fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the TROUBLE.TXT file
  140. in the \HELP directory on the EtherDisk diskette for troubleshooting
  141. procedures.

  144. provides information about obtaining product support for the adapter.
