THREE!TWO!ONE!ZERO!BREAKOUT[ByThomasHaines]has
arrived!Hurr-waitaminute...([amusingthoughtfulsilence
ensues]BreakOut..Breakout..Arkanoid,Batty,Brick-out,Multi-
Briques,ArkanoidII-theRevengeofDoh,GemBreakout..)hmmm..that
nameseemsfamiliar.Breakout.Breakout.Yes,andeven
afterthat*dramatic*countdown,Ifeelsomewhatletdownbecause
it'sYETanotherBreakoutclone.Andwhatabobbinsgameitis.
Letsbeginwiththetitle.'BreakOutbyThomasHaines'(sickof
ityet?).It'snotexactlythemostcatchy,originaltitleeverto
graceaFalconGame.Butthespacebetween'Break'and'Out',I
think,isanoriginaladdition,achangefromtheold,well-flogged
'Breakout'roll-off-the-tongue-style.Butseparating'break'and
'out'maybeThomasHaines'onlybreak(Ohplease-Ed)from
tradition.ThisisnottheGreatEscape,thisisnoteven
Cops'n'Robbers,thisisinfactBreakOut-abat,aball,some
bricksetvoila!...

Beforeweareflung,kickingandscreaming,intothe
'game',weare*treated*toanintro.Andwhatanintro.A
scannedpictureofasunsetoverthesea,withablack,thinand
veryunantialiasedlogo,isdrawnontothescreenwithasortof
circular,clockwisewipe.*Truly*beautiful.Then,insyncwith
Çthemusic(rippedfromthePlastikkdemo)a3,2,1,0countdownensues,
perhapsinapatheticattempttocreatesometension,ormaybe
toloadthe'effect'.Thiseffectisthreerotating2Dvector
squares,spinninginsideeachother,withabluepacmanchomping
jerkilyinthemiddle.WhyPacmanhasmadeanappearanceisa
littleunclear.Thecodermayhavehopedtothrowanetofillusion
acrossourimpressionableeyeballs,thinkingwewouldbeconfused
andforgetthatthegameisactuallycalledBreakOut.However,he
doesnotsucceedandthewholeeffectjustincreasesthefeelingthat
thisgameispasseandwasprobablyplayedbyboredcavemen,witha
rockandthebonesoftheirlastmeal.
Okay,introoverwehitspaceandareunceremoniouslythrustinto
thethickofthegame.Oursensesrevoltatthesightthatgreets
us.Yes,it'souroldfavourite,theuninvitedvisitor:theGemFill,
splendidlyresplendentinwhite.WenowwonderifMr.Hainesis
actuallytryingtocreatetheatmosphereofanancientAtariFREE
Gemgamespecial,becauseheiscertainlysucceeding.[Except
thateveryoneknewwhenAtarimadecrapgamestheywereactually
onlycallingadoubleblufftooutfoxBillGatesandgethimtocopy
thegamesandsokillMicrosoftofffrominside.Orsomething.]
Therearetwodifferenttileswhichyoumusthitwiththe
ball.OneofthemiswhiteandfilledwithabobblyGemFill
(thistileneedstwohits(usually,buttherearesomebugs))and
theotherisaninsipidmarooncolourwhichhardlyshowsupagainst
thebackground.Andtalkingofthebackground,it'sthatold
favouritescannedtruecolourpictureofamountainandsomewater
usedintheCamerademobySentryandanImpulsedemocalled
Angest..well'hackneyed'seemstobeThomasHaines'middlename,so
Iguessweshouldn'tbesurprised.
Thebatisacrudelump,filledwiththeohsodelicatewhite
GemFill(cyclingaswellthistime..mmmmmmmm)andtheballisa
hideousluridgreencolour.Itallbringsanewmeaningtothe
phrase:'assaultingthesenses'.
ÇSo,ontothegameitself..itstartswiththeballonthebat,
rightmousebuttonreleasesitandleftmousebuttonpausesthe
game..?!!Thebat'smovementisverysensitive,sowearesoon
beingtreatedtothelegend:'LifeLost'."Onedown,onlytwomoreto
beendured,"wemutter.
Thebounceoftheballissoconsistentthatasthegamedrawsto
aclose-therebeingperhapstwoorthreetilesleft-itbecomes
verydifficulttohitthemandwhetheranyonecanbebotheredto
spendthetimeneededtoachievethecompletionofthelevelishighly
doubtful.IwasreachingfortheresetbuttonwhenIrememberedmy
obligationasagamesreviewerandthesacrificesImustmakefor
thegreatergood,soonIbattled..(thatisbattledwithmy
eyelids..).
EventuallythelevelwascompletedandIwasrewardedwitha
fanfare-ishsampleandsomewordssomundanethatI'veforgotten
them,buttheywereprobablyakinto:YouWin!Andthatwasthat.
Thefirstlevelturnedouttobetheoneandonlylevel.Butwe
shouldatleastthankthecoderforputtingusoutofourmisery
reasonablyquicklyandnotprolongingoursufferinganymorethanhe
alreadyhasbybeingborn.
So,youmaythinkthereviewendshere.Butyouwouldbe
SOwrong.BecausethereismoretoThomasHaines'BreakOutthan
merelyonelevel,doneonarippedbackground,withGemfilledtiles
andrepetitivesampleswhichgiveyouaheadacheaftertenseconds
because...
...thereisanoptiontocreateyourownBreakOutlevels!
HoweverIfearthatMr.Hainesmusthavebeensomewhatshyofthis
featurebecauseIonlyfounditoutafterextensivereadingand
decipheringofthereadme_1sttextwhichcomeswiththegame(in
whichyouwillalsofindashortstorywhichONNOACCOUNT
shouldyouread).Inthistextwearetoldthatbutton'c'will
accesstheleveleditor,andshouldbepressedonthe'intro'part
(whichincidentally,thegamerevertstowhenyouhavelostall
Çyourlives).SoIdulyplayedandlostagameofBreakOutandthen
waitedfortheintrotoreappear.Afteranunreasonabledelayit
creptbackguiltily,doublysobecauseIhadtositthroughthe
*exciting*countdownbitagain.SofinallywhenPacmanwasrestored
tohisplaceofhonourIpressed'c'.
Iwaited.
Iwaitedsomemore.
Ipressed'c'asecondtime.StillPacmanchompedawayundisturbed,
musingonthenuancesofhislifeasaminorcharacterinaminus
game.

Aha!Mr.Pinkhasjusthadtheideathatmaybe'CapsLock'hasbeen
turnedonandthecodeisnotrecognisingacapital'C'asthe
requisitesmall'c'.Ifso,itmustbeaniceVGAspecificbug
[withthegame]becauseonMr.Pink'sniceRGBAtarimonitorhe
doesn'thaveanytrouble(apartfromthatcausedbythe
aforementionedgame).

thisgamehasalreadyfaileditstestongroundsofbeingcompletely
bobbins.
TheBreakOut'leveleditor'isnoslickReservoirGods'
DoubleBobbleEditor.Ithasobviouslybeenbundledtogetherasa
lastgaspresorttospiceupadone-to-deathgameandismorecrude
ÇthantheentirerepertoireoftheVizcastintheeyesofMary
Whitehouse.Rightmousebuttoncyclesthroughthethreeavailable
tiles,(oneofwhichisablanktiletodeletewith)whichare
displayedatthebottomrightcornerofthescreenandthatmemorable
greenballmakesareappearanceasthemousepointer.Youdraw
whateverdesigntakesyourfancy,then'Return'willsavethenew
leveltodisk(itactuallysavesoverThomas'originallevel.
