The Falangists under General Franco had initiated a civil war in the summer of 1936, invading from Portugal and Spanish Morrocco, aided by widespread military mutinies. The weak Republican forces were driven back on all fronts. The leftist Popular Front government appealed to the Soviets for support, while the Falangists won the backing of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. Communists, Fascists, and Nazis all regarded the brutal Spanish Civil War as an ideal arena for the testing of new weaponry and tactics. The Falangist drive on Madrid in the winter of 1936/37 provided a testing grounds for new armor on all sides. A Falangist drive towards Madrid's vital supply road was spear-headed by several companies of German light tanks, and the Republicans rushed a platoon of new Soviet armored cars (equipped with refitted Rheinmetall 37mm AT guns) to stop a breakthrough.

The German XIX Mountain Infantry Corps opposes a numerically stronger Russian force. On the bare tundra combat is limited to intensive patrol actions. Sgt Hofer has been selected to lead a raid patrol to destroy a Russian strong point. Reconnaissance patrols have found that the strong point consists of two bunkers and other entrenchments. It is reported to held by an infantry platoon. There is another bunker on the hill to the north of the objective. The Russians have strong 120 mm mortar support. Stealth and violence of execution will be required to successfully complete this mission.

Operation Citadel has been canceled, and the armored reserves rushed to other fronts. The Soviets, who have quickly bounced back from the hideous losses at Prokharovka and Beresowka, have launched a series of concentric offensives along the frontage of Army Group South. The most recent offensive struck a weak point on Eighth Army's left flank, to the southeast of 48 PzKorps. "GrossDeutschland" PanzerGrenadier Division, which has been returned from OKH reserves to 48 PzKorps, was instructed to detach a reaction force to deal with the Soviet forces pouring through the gap. The Soviets are apparently not aware of the presence of this German armored force, and Kampfgruppe von Natsmer is in a position to catch a mechanized force from an unprotected flank.

The second group you now command is comprised of around 20 tanks, some supporting infantry and possible support from the airforce and will attempt to take Gela with a headlong attack down Highway 117.

The mobile units of both Panzerarmee Afrika and 5th Panzer Army have unified under the command of "Group Zeigler" for an all-out assault on II US Corps. This is possible because Montgomery's 8th British Army has allowed Rommel's Italian-German army to break contact in Libya, allowing all Axis forces in North Africa to briefly concentrate on the Americans in Central Tunisia. Group Zeigler shattered Combat Command A of 1 Armored Division in its positions around Sidi Bou Zid on February 14th. Infantry elements are now trapped behind enemy lines on a hill complex south and southeast of Sidi Bou Zid. Corps has passed down the order for Combat Command C to counterattack from its positions along the Sbeitla-Faid road west of Sidi Bou Zid.

On the Moselle, east of Dielauard. Major General Eddy's XII Corps had been attempting to cross the Moselle for a week before 80th Division's 317th Regimental Combat Team was able to find a weakly defended sector on September 12th. By midnight, they had managed to get the bulk of the RCT into a bridgehead anchored on Hill 382. Two combat engineer battalions quickly laid down bridges, and CCA of 4th armored Division was preparing to move through the infantry and effect a breakthrough. At 0100, the roadblock north of Loisy heard armor moving up. The Germans had scraped together a regimental-level counterattack, throwing an intact assault gun battalion and three or four infantry battalions against the unprepared Americans. The night burst into flame, and the bridgehead was held only by desperate combined-arms action before the bridge itself.

The Allied invasion of the Italian mainland is a week old. British 8th Army is slowly moving through Calabria, and the American 5th Army has seized deep beachheads at Salerno and Paestum. 5th Army's British X Corps is locked in bitter see-saw battles with panzergrenadiers around Salerno and Battipagia in the north, but American VI Corps has encountered only light resistance after the defeat of the disorganized tank counterattacks on the 9th. 179 Regimental Combat Team moved up the Sele-Calore corridor to seize the pass at Porte Sele in the high mountains towering over the Salerno coastal plain. 179 RCT failed to screen the draws leading off of Mt. Eboli, and a German armored kampfgruppe descended in the rear of the RCT, cutting the forward elements off from its support. 645 Tank Destroyer Battalion and elements of 753 Tank Battalion found a blocking force in the small town of Persano, sitting across the trapped American troops' line of communications. A counterattack was mounted at noon, with a company of M10 tank destroyers and a platoon of M4 Shermans thrown hastily against the German roadblock. The green tankers of the 645th and 753rd, dreaming of cowboy-movie cavalry rescues, charged well-sited 88mm FlaK guns.

The Germans along the Seille have been shattered. The remnants have fled behind the Neid River, now 3 times its own size, flooded. The disorganized Germans missed a bridge at the tiny river village of Sanry-sur-Nied, and Task Force Lagrew of 6th Armored Division's Combat Command B seized a bridgehead. TF Lagrew is now ready to burst out of the bridgehead and disrupt a possible German line of defence along the Nied. At this same time, a kampfgruppe of 21 Panzer Division (finally reconstituted after several months in the line as an anemic infantry outfit) is in the area, and is sure to attempt to crush the small bridgehead. All manouvers can be expected to be slow, as the river and creek valleys are morrasses of mud and standing water.

Through this immobilizing mess, the much-abused 1st Battalion of 13th armored Regiment has been ordered to sieze the German lines of communications near a location later called "Peter's Corner".

The summer 1944 campaign petered out here, on the far bank of the Vistula River in central Poland. Soviet resources since then have been concentrated on the conquest of the Balkans and the long-drawn-out battle for Hungary. The doomed revolt of Warsaw passed by with total Soviet indifference. Now, months of preparation and mountains of material have led to this moment. I Ukrainian Front burst out of the large Sandomierz bridgehead to the south three days ago. German reinforcements are even now streaming to seal off the hole caused by 4 Panzer Armys vaporization. Streaming by the bridgeheads held by I Belorussian Front. Overwhelming artillery has been concentrated on the thin-but-tough defensive rings thrown up by the Germans around Magnuszew and Pulwany. Two entire all-arms armies have been concentrated in Magnuszew bridgehead, 8 Guards Army on a southwesterly axis, and 5 Shock Army on the westerly axis. 301 Rifle Division's sector faces the centre of the positions held by one of LXII Korp's infantry divisions. Which one will not be important for long - it is expected that it will disintergrate under the pressure of 5 Shock Army's assault. There are no prepared positions between the rear of the German defensive lines and Berlin.

On October 12, 1998, a rebellion was staged at a top secret nuclear weapons facility in a region codenamed D31 in Russia. Col. Strominov, commander of the facility, was captured during the outbreak of hostilities. One of his most trusted aides was apparently the leader of the rebellion. With no support forces of their own available, the Russian military called upon US forces stationed nearby to relieve the situation. Walled in on three of its four sides by cliffs, the D31 facility was built and equipped to withstand a massive armored assault. Three armur battalions were sent on the assault mission. Plagued by mechanical problems in the Siberian tundra, only one of the three battalions succeeded in reaching the facility unscathed on October 16th. LtC. Sennet of Task Force Stag, when faced with the decision of whether to pull back or to push ahead, chose the latter. The facility had to be taken at all costs, before the rebels managed to extract the ICBM launch codes from the Colonel.

Assault on Takao Ridge

In August 1979 North Korea invaded South Korea to begin the 2nd Korean War. The United States put forth several resolutions in the United Nations but each was, in turn, vetoed by China. Consequently it was NATO that stepped in to assist the South. Five countries deployed forces to assist in pushing back the Northern forces. The North Korean Army was considerably better armed and trained that it had been before. In keeping with standard Warsaw pact doctrine, one of the initial objectives of the North Koreans was to try and get a sizeable ground force into position from which to attack the NATO supply lines. Late on 24 September, the 3rd Battalion, 112th Motor Rifle Regiment launched a probing assault on the French 9th Expeditionary Force (9 EF) located on Takao Ridge. If the North Koreans could breach the French lines the 54th Independant Tank Battalion, currently in reserve, would exploit the opportunity and push through the breach to begin ravaging the Allied rear areas.This would be the 9th Expeditionary Force's first real test of the war.

Welcome to the Tough Man Contest. This scenario is based solely on the idea of who is better; the U.S. Army or the U.S. Marines. The date is July 6, 1997, a day that will change the opinions of two branches of the United States armed forces. You hear it all of the time: The Army is tougher. No, the Marines are tougher. You hear it at the PXes, the supply depots, the firing range, and even at the local bars on military installations all over the country. Well, finally military officials, leaders, and a few well-connected people in Washington, D.C. are putting an end to the age old question of just "who is the better man".
We present the Tough Man Contest. The temperature is a balmy 120 degrees in the shade, here at the National Training Center. Pull up a chair, pop the top of your favorite beverage, sit back and watch the fun However, we ask that you please beware of flying shrapnel and bullets. Hey, after all, this ain't football, boys!
