  5. What is it?
  6. -----------
  7. This is a new beta release of Private Idaho (a PGP, anonymous
  8. remailer, and nym server front-end for Windows).  This document
  9. updates any information found in the help file.

  11. Private Idaho is unsupported freeware, licensed under the GNU
  12. General Public License.  The licensing agreement is found in the
  13. license.txt file, distributed with this application.  See:

  19. 2.8b3 is a bug fix release.  It replaces 2.8b2, released 9/26/96.

  54. Installation
  55. ------------
  56. PI28B3.EXE is a self-extracting .ZIP file.  It uncompresses all of the
  57. required files to run Private Idaho.  You can delete these files after
  58. you've installed Private Idaho.

  60. You can also choose to run PGP QuickStart from PI-SETUP.  This utility
  61. will help you download and configure PGP.
  62.  
  63. If you're updating a previous previous of Private Idaho, PI-SETUP will
  64. only replace older files.  You'll be prompted to replace each
  65. existing file.

  67. If for some reason you have problems with the installation, you can
  68. manually copy the files.

  97. Mixmaster and Private Idaho
  98. ---------------------------
  99. Mixmaster (or Type II) remailers offer a high level of security 
  100. (see http://www.obscura.com/~loki for complete details).  Up until now,
  101. Mixmaster has only been available to UNIX users.  Mixmaster's author, 
  102. Lance Cottrell, has recently released a DOS client version of the 
  103. application that works with Private Idaho 2.7b (and later).
  104.  
  105. Since the Mixmaster client uses export-controlled cryptography, it is not
  106. included with Private Idaho.  Refer to http://www.obscura.com/~loki for 
  107. information on how to get a copy of MIXMASTE.ZIP (the compressed version
  108. of Mixmaster and its support files).
  109.  
  110. Note: Although Lance and I have taken every reasonable precaution to assure
  111. that DOS Mixmaster was not exported, it appears that one or more persons 
  112. unknown to us have exported the DOS version of Mixmaster (in violation of US 
  113. law). We intend to continue to abide by the letter of US law in this matter, 
  114. however we will list non-US ftp sites from which Mixmaster may be obtained as 
  115. a public service:

  119. To be able to send messages through Mixmaster remailers you need several 
  120. files:
  121.  
  122. MIXMASTE.EXE - the Mixmaster client
  123. MIXMASTE.CON - a support file
  124. PUBRING.MIX - the list of Mixmaster remailer keys
  125. TYPE2.LIS - the list of Mixmaster remailers
  126. MIXMSTR.TXT - statistics on Mixmaster remailers
  127. MIX.PIF - the PIF file for shelling to the DOS application
  128.  
  129. These files are included in the MIXMASTE.ZIP file.  Uncompress the files and
  130. move them to the directory containing Private Idaho.

  132. After you've installed these files, in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file add the 
  133. following line:

  135. SET MIXPATH=C:\PIDAHO 
  136.  
  137. with the directory path specifying the Private Idaho directory.  Reboot your 
  138. computer and run Private Idaho.
  139.  
  140. Using Mixmaster remailers with Private Idaho is no different than using 
  141. Cypherpunk style remailers.  Select Mixmaster from the Remailers menu, 
  142. compose and address your message, select the remailer(s) from the drop-down
  143. list box to use, and choose Append info from the Message menu.
  144.  
  145. Private Idaho will shell out to the DOS version of Mixmaster, and prepare 
  146. the message for sending.

  148. You'll need to update information about Mixmaster remailers, just like 
  149. Cypherpunk remailers.  Specifically the PUBRING.MIX, TYPE2.LIS, and
  150. MIXMSTR.TXT files.  You can do this over the Net with the new update
  151. remailer info command.
