14. Network-Specific Information for Freelance Graphics
----------------------
1. SUPPORTED NETWORKS
----------------------
Lotus Freelance Graphics supports the following networks:
IBM LAN Server versions 3.0 and 4.0
Novell NetWare versions 3.x, 4.0x, and 4.1
-----------------------------------------------
2. WHY USE FREELANCE GRAPHICS ON A NETWORK?
-----------------------------------------------
The benefits of using Freelance Graphics on a network include:
* Conserving hard-disk space by having only one copy of
Freelance Graphics on the file server instead of having
a copy on each personal computer
* Allowing users to share files, computer equipment, printers,
backup devices, and other networked resources
* The ability to quickly distribute files, templates, and
applications while users access files immediately
* The ability to back up files centrally
* Saving time when upgrading to new releases of Freelance
Graphics, because you upgrade the software on the file server
instead of on individual computers
--------------------------------------------
3. STEPS TO COMPLETE A NETWORK INSTALLATION
--------------------------------------------
You must complete the following steps to install Freelance Graphics
on a file server:
1. When upgrading from a previous release of Freelance Graphics,
copy files that you want to save to another directory before
removing the program files from your server.
2. Determine the location and names of the server directories.
3. Use the Install program to install Freelance Graphics on the
server. Before you run Install, map all node users to the
application and shared tools directories.
4. Create any personal or shared data directories on the file
server.
5. Make printers and network directories available to users.
6. (Optional) Create a command file, or update the system or user
login script, to connect users to network directories.
7. Give users the information listed in "Information to
Give Users" later in this document.
-----------------------------------
4. DESIGNING A DIRECTORY STRUCTURE
-----------------------------------
There are several required and optional directories that you and
Install create. Before you install Freelance Graphics, decide
where you want to put the directories. Lotus recommends that you use
the directory structure shown here:
Main Lotus directory (\LOTUSOS2)
Lotus Shared Tools directory (\LOTUSOS2\COMPNENT)
(for Word Pro and Freelance Graphics)
Program directory for Freelance Graphics (\LOTUSOS2\FLG)
NOTE: Do not install Freelance Graphics 96 for OS/2 in the same
directory as Lotus Windows 3.x or Windows 95 applications.
-----------------------------------
5. HOW TO INSTALL ON A FILE SERVER
-----------------------------------
To run a File Server Install:
1. Insert the CD-ROM or Disk 1 into the appropriate drive.
2. Open an OS/2 window.
3. Enter X:\INSTALL, where X: is your CD-ROM drive or floppy
drive.
Install consists of a series of dialog boxes that are generally
self-explanatory. If you need more information when using a
dialog box, choose Help.
4. Select "Install on a file server" at the bottom of the Welcome
to Install dialog box.
NOTE: If you run a Distribution Install to the file server, you can
run subsequent Standard and File Server Installs from the server. If
you perform a Freelance Graphics Server install on the file server,
you must also run a Node Install before you can run the application.
------------------------------------
6. HOW TO INSTALL ON A NETWORK NODE
------------------------------------
Once you install Freelance Graphics on a file server, the Node
Install program resides on that server. To install Freelance
Graphics on a node, you must run a Node Install.
Before you run a Node Install, map all node users to the
application and Shared Tools directories. Then, to run a Node
Install:
1. Open an OS/2 window.
2. Type X:\<path>\INSTALL, where X:\<path> is the drive letter and
path for Freelance Graphics on your file server.
3. Choose OK.
NOTE: If you want to run Freelance Graphics from the file server
rather than from a node, you must complete the Node Install on the
file server.
---------------------------------
7. CREATING PERSONAL DIRECTORIES
---------------------------------
Users who run Freelance Graphics from a file server must have
a personal directory.
This directory can reside on either the file server or a node, and
contains the application configuration files. If you selected
features during the File Server Install that node users could copy,
the personal directory contains these also. Users can also store data
or other files in their personal directories.
When deciding where to locate personal directories, determine if the
file server or node has enough disk space for personal directories.
The file server may be the more convenient location for personal
directories if you are responsible for regularly backing up and
archiving data files.
If you decide to put personal directories on nodes, let users create
the directories because they are familiar with the directory structure
of their hard disks. During installation on a node, Install prompts
users for the name and location of their personal directory, and
creates the directory if it does not already exist.
If you decide to put personal directories on the file server, create
the directories yourself, because you must assign network names and
access privileges to those directories.
------------------------------------
8. CREATING SHARED DATA DIRECTORIES
------------------------------------
Shared data directories contain data files users create. One copy of
a shared data file may serve many users. Shared data directories can
have any name, can be in any location on the file server, and must be
available to node users.
After you install Freelance Graphics on the file server, make the
server directories available to network users. The procedure
differs for each network. However, you generally need to give users
read-only access to directories in which you don't want them to write
over, delete, or create files, and give each user full access to a
personal directory. Additionally, if applicable for your network,
make directories shareable by giving the directory location on the
server a network name (share name).
--------------
9. CID INSTALL
--------------
CID (Configuration, Installation, and Distribution) is an
IBM-provided technology that allows software installation to be
automated in a networked environment. Before using CID you must set
up your environment to support CID. IBM describes how to set up and
manage the CID utilities in a set of books including the following
titles:
* NTS/2 Redirected Installation and Configuration Guide
(S96F-8488-00)
* Automated Installation for CID Enabled Extended Services/
LAN Server V3.0 and Network Transport Services/2 (GG24-3781-01)
* Automated Installation for CID Enabled Products in LAN Server
V3.0 RIPL, TCP/IP and Novell NetWare 3.11 Environments
(GG24-3977)
* Automated Installation of CID Enabled Products Using NetView
DM/2 V2.0 and NetView DM R4 (GG24-3782).
The install disks for Freelance Graphics include a command file and a
response file for use in automating a CID install. The command file,
FLG_CID.CMD, includes the commands and descriptions of parameters
necessary for CID installation. The FLG.RSP file includes the
selected user responses. The .CMD and the .RSP files require editing
to set them up for the user's specific installation. Each file has
comments that describe the contents that should be customized before
automating the CID installation.
The utility that allows the automation of redirected installation and
configuration is the LAN Configuration Installation Distribution
Utility (LAN CID Utility). File redirection between the client
workstation and the server is handled by the Service Installable File
System (SRVIFS). With SRVIFS, you can install and configure these
products on a number of clients from one server.
A. Client Workstation
---------------------
To configure client workstations, follow the client procedure below:
NOTE: This information is from IBM's NTS/2 Redirected Installation
and Configuration Guide (S96F-8488-00) and the page references below
apply to this book.
1. Install LAN Adapter and Protocol Support (LAPS). You must
install this component of NTS/2 since LAPS gives you access to
the server in a LAN environment (so that you can use redirected
installation). You don't need to install full LAN Server 3.0.
2. Install SRVIFS (Service Installable File System) by using the
THINIFS command. The THINIFS command is used to install files
required for a SRVIFS requester.
a) Run THINIFS (see page G-25 for details)
3. Install LAN CID Utility by using the CASINSTL command. The
CASINSTL command is used to install LCU on the client
workstation.
a) Run CASINSTL (see page G-5 for details)
NOTE: CASINSTL will create the STARTUP.CMD file on the client
that will activate the CID-CMD file supplied by Lotus. No user
intervention is needed to start the CMD file.
4. Reboot the system. The installation process begins at this
point. The products will get installed without further
interaction from the user.
-------------
10. UNINSTALL
-------------
NOTE: Uninstall is not available in the Beta build of Freelance
Graphics.
The Uninstall program files will be copied to the \LOTUSOS2\UNINST directory.
The Install program will create a program object for Lotus Uninstall in the
Lotus SmartSuite\Lotus Accessories folder.
-----------------------------
11. MULTILINGUAL INSTALLATION
-----------------------------
NOTE: Multiple languages are not available in the Beta build of
Freelance Graphics.
You can install single copies of Freelance Graphics in multiple
languages. This capability is part of the Lotus strategy for
multilingual computing.
If you installed a node version of Freelance Graphics, you can
click on the icon for the language you want to install next.
Additional language node installs can only be made to a single
copy of Freelance Graphics on the node. The first language you
install to a node becomes the default language. To add an additional
language version of a Lotus product, you must rerun the Install
program. The Install program informs you that you already
have a copy of the product in a different language and preserves
the directory structure of the default language.
The Install program creates icons for the additional languages of
Freelance Graphics in the Lotus SmartSuite for OS/2 Warp folder.
These icons can be identified by the 2-character ISO language tag.
For example, the icon for the French version of Freelance Graphics
is labeled Freelance Graphics - FR.
Like node installs, additional language standard installs can only
be made to one copy of the product. They cannot be installed in
different places on the same machine.
Performing a Server Install from CD-ROM
---------------------------------------
The first language installed on the server will be the primary
language on the server. Additional languages installed on the server
become secondary languages on the server. The first language a node
user chooses to install from the server becomes the primary language
on the node, regardless of its status on the server. Additional
languages the node user chooses to install become secondary languages
on the node.
To install an additional language from a multilanguage CD-ROM:
1. Install a copy of Freelance Graphics on the server.
2. Run the Install program from the CD-ROM again.
3. Choose the additional language you want to install.
4. To install the additional language as part of the copy of
Freelance Graphics you already installed, choose the same
drives and directories you chose the first time.
To install the additional language as a separate copy of
Freelance Graphics, choose different drives and/or
directories.
5. Inform your node users where they can find the icon for the
language(s) they want to install.
-----------------------------
12. INFORMATION TO GIVE USERS
-----------------------------
Provide users with the following information:
* Instructions on how to connect to:
- The network
- File server directories, such as the program, personal, and
shared data directories for the Lotus product
- Network printers, and how to print on a network
* Information on using the Freelance Graphics Install program
* Information on starting Freelance Graphics
-------------------------
13. IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM
-------------------------
PROBLEM: A user cannot run Freelance Graphics from the
assigned node.
SOLUTION: Ensure that the user has completed the Node Install
successfully, has read-only access to the program directory, is mapped
to the appropriate directory, and that the network connections are
valid.
PROBLEM: When clicking the icon to start Freelance Graphics,
a user receives an error message saying the path is invalid or the file
is not found.
SOLUTION: Check the drive letter specified for the Freelance
Graphics application icon. To do this:
1. Click the program icon with the right mouse button.
2. Choose Settings from the context menu.
3. Make sure that the drive letter in the user's network
connection to the Lotus program directory is the same as that
specified for the application icon, or change the
properties of the icon to use the drive letter specified in the
user's network connection.
PROBLEM: A user tries to gain access to a shared data file in the
shared data directory on the file server and receives a message
indicating that no reservation is available.
SOLUTION: This problem could be caused by any of the following:
* Another user has the file reservation.
* The directory is a read-only directory and does not allow users
to write to files.
* The file is a read-only file.
