  1. OSINSNIF - NO PROMPT FOR MS WINDOWS DISKETTES OR NO WIN-OS/2 SUPPORT

  12. DESCRIPTION
  13.  
  14. This document describes what to do if one of the following occurs 
  15. during the installation of OS/2 for Windows:
  16.  
  17. * There are no prompts for Windows diskettes during installation.
  18.  
  19. * You complete the installation, but WIN-OS/2 won't start.
  20.  
  21. * Selective Install does not have an option for installing WIN-OS/2
  22.   support.
  23.  
  24. * There is no error message stating that Windows is NOT on the system.
  25.  
  26. RESOLUTION
  27.  
  28. Note: Make sure you have a backup of any file you intend to change.
  29.  
  30.  1. Open OS/2 System.
  31.  
  32.  2. Open Command Prompts.
  33.  
  34.  3. Select OS/2 Window.
  35.  
  36.  4. Type x: CD WINDOWS and press Enter to change to the WINDOWS
  37.     directory (x is the drive where Windows is installed).
  38.  
  39.  5. Type E WIN.INI and press Enter to edit the WIN.INI file. (If the
  40.     message, "Embedded Null Characters" is returned, select Continue
  41.     Loading File.)

  43.  6. Make sure the following section headings are present in the file:
  44.  
  45.        [Windows]
  46.        [Desktop]
  47.  
  48.  7. If the headings are present save and exit the file. If you get a
  49.     message about no file type being selected, select Type and then
  50.     Plain Text; then select Set.
  51.  
  52.     If the headings are missing, restore the WIN.INI file from a backup
  53.     diskette or the system, or unpack it from the Windows diskette.
  54.  
  55.  8. Type E SYSTEM.INI and press Enter to edit the SYSTEM.INI file. (If
  56.     the message, "Embedded Null Characters" is returned, select
  57.     Continue Loading File.)
  58.  
  59.  9. Make sure the following section headings are present in the file
  60.     (see step 7):
  61.  
  62.        [Boot]
  63.        [Keyboard]
  64.  
  65. 10. Type E PROGMAN.INI and press Enter to edit the PROGMAN.INI file.
  66.     (If the message, "Embedded Null Characters" is returned, select
  67.     Continue Loading File.)
  68.  
  69. 11. Make sure the following section headings are present in the file
  70.     (see step 7):
  71.  
  72.        [Settings]
  73.        [Groups]
  74.  
  75. 12. Type E CONTROL.INI and press Enter to edit the CONTROL.INI file.
  76.     (If the message, "Embedded Null Characters" is returned, select
  77.     Continue Loading File.)
  78.  
  79. 13. Make sure the following section headings are present in the file
  80.     (see step 7):
  81.  
  82.        [Current]
  83.        [ColorSchemes]
  84.  
  85. 14. When all the files are saved, close OS/2 Window.
  86.  
  87. 15. Open OS/2 System.
  88.  
  89. 16. Open System Setup; then select Selective Install.
  90.  
  91. 17. Select OK at the System Configuration screen. The option to install
  92.     WIN-OS/2 support should now be available.
  93.  
  94. 18. Complete the Selective Install of WIN-OS/2 support, selecting only
  95.     Install Standard WIN-OS/2 Desktop at the Advanced Configuration
  96.     screen.
