  12. DESCRIPTION
  13.  
  14. Your system has OS/2 2.x running and you can get the following message 
  15. panel:
  16.  
  17.    Display Driver Install detected an invalid argument count in a 
  18.    .DSC file. Check configuration files.
  19.  
  20.    1. Error message while doing a DSPINSTL.
  21.  
  22.    2. Error message while doing a Selective Install for video.
  23.  
  24.    3. Error message while doing an upgrade of OS/2 2.x to new release
  25.       or CSD.
  26.  
  27.  
  28. You select OK and get the "Initialization Fails" message; then the 
  29. message panel appears again.
  30.  
  31. Note: This problem occurs on a system that previously had the wrong
  32.       chip set selected. For example, you had an ET4000 video adapter
  33.       but selected Cirrus during Display Install. This caused one of
  34.       the DSC files to be corrupted.
  35.  
  36. RESOLUTION
  37.  
  38. 1. Press F3 to go to a command prompt.
  39.  
  40. 2. Type x: and press Enter (x is the drive where OS/2 is installed).
  41.  
  42. 3. Type CD \OS2\INSTALL and press Enter.
  43.  
  44. 4. Type DEL *.DSC and press Enter to delete the DSC files.
  45.  
  46. 5. In drive A, insert:
  47.  
  48.    * Diskette 2 for salmon-labeled diskettes
  49.    * Diskette 1 for green-labeled diskettes
  50.    * Diskette 1, 3, and 4 for blue-labeled diskettes
  51.  
  52.    Note: The next step is required for all three blue-labeled diskettes.
  53.  
  54. 6. Type UNPACK A:BUNDLE and press Enter to unpack the DSC files from the
  55.    diskettes.
  56.  
  57. 7. Set your system back to VGA mode by one of the following methods.
  58.       
  59. Note: Please read ALL of the following before continuing with the
  60.       procedure.
  61.  
  62. The following describes two ways to return your system to VGA mode, or
  63. to bring your system back to the Desktop if it is locked up with no 
  64. activity occurring.
  65.  
  66. When you are installing OS/2 and the system locks up near the end, 
  67. usually after Diskette 17 (blue diskettes) or Diskette 13 (salmon and 
  68. green diskettes), or after you are prompted to restart, the system 
  69. freezes on the logos or on the message, "Loading, Please Wait!"
  70.  
  71. If you have one of the following, Method 2, RSPDSPI, MUST be used:
  72.  
  73. * PS ValuePoint
  74. * ATI video card
  75. * S-3 chip set
  76.  
  77. Note: S-3 drivers require LDF.COM, which you can download from the BBS
  78.       (919-517-0001). Check with the vendor for the latest driver and
  79.       any utility programs needed for installation.
  80.  
  81. If you have installed Service Pak XR06200 or XR06300:
  82.  
  83.    After completing installation, if you receive a blank screen, return
  84.    the system to VGA mode. When prompted for diskettes, use the Service
  85.    Pak diskettes.
  86.  
  87. Method 1: SETVGA
  88. ----------------
  89. Note: If you installed the operating system from a CD-ROM, review step 5
  90.       before beginning.
  91.  
  92.  1. Insert the Installation Diskette in drive A; then press Ctrl+Alt+Del
  93.     to restart the system. If the keyboard is locked, turn the system
  94.     off and wait 30 seconds; then turn it back on.
  95.  
  96.  2. When prompted, insert Diskette 1 and press Enter.
  97.  
  98.  3. When the Welcome screen appears, press Esc to get to the command
  99.     prompt.
  100.  
  101.  4. At the A: prompt, type x: and press Enter (x is the drive where OS/2
  102.     is installed).
  103.  
  104.  5. Type CD \OS2 and press Enter to change to the \OS2 directory.
  105.  
  106.  6. Type the following and press Enter after each (x is the drive where
  107.     OS/2 is installed):
  108.  
  109.        DIR *.* > SVGADATA.PMI
  110.        SETVGA x:
  111.  
  112.  7. When SETVGA starts, it prompts you for Display Driver Diskette 1.
  113.     If you installed from CD-ROM, it is recommended that you create
  114.     this diskette. Type the following and press Enter after each (e is
  115.     the CD-ROM drive letter; size is 35 for 3.5-inch diskettes, or 525
  116.     for 5.25-inch diskettes):
  117.  
  118.        e:\DISKIMGS\LOADDSKF
  119.        e:\DISKIMGS\OS2\size\DISP1.DSK A:
  120.  
  121.  8. Upon completion, restart the system.
  122.  
  123.  9. Go to an OS/2 Window; then type DSPINSTL and press Enter to install
  124.     video drivers and set the correct resolution.
  125.  
  126. 10. Shut down and restart the system. Do a Selective Install for your
  127.     printer and WIN-OS/2 support.
  128.  
  129.     Note: If you're unsuccessful, check your hard disk for the
  130.           following files: 
  131.  
  132.              IBMVGA32.DLL      42378       4-22-93
  133.              IBMDEV32.DLL      85326       4-22-93
  134.              BVHVGA.DLL        40892       4-25-93
  135.              DISPLAY.DLL       77120       4-29-93
  136.  
  137.           If they are not present, unpack them from Display Driver
  138.           Diskette 1:
  139.  
  140.           a. Insert the diskette in drive A.
  141.           b. Type the following and press Enter after each (x is the
  142.              drive where OS/2 is installed):
  143.  
  144.                 x:
  145.                 \OS2\UNPACK A:\VGA
  146.  
  147. 11. Insert the correct diskettes in the appropriate drive:
  148.  
  149.     * 3.5 diskettes:
  150.  
  151.       - Blue label:   Diskette 2
  152.       - Salmon label: Diskette 3
  153.       - Green label:  Diskette 3
  154.  
  155.     * 5.25 diskettes: Diskette 4
  156.  
  157.     * CD-ROM: Files are in a directory.
  158.  
  159. 12. Type the following and press Enter:
  160.  
  161.        x:\OS2\UNPACK A:\BUNDLE/N:DISPLAY.DLL
  162.  
  163.     This places the files on your hard disk in the \OS2\DLL
  164.     subdirectory.
  165.  
  166. 13. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and make sure it has the following
  167.     statements (x is the drive where OS/2 is installed):
  168.  
  169.        DEVINFO=SCR,VGA,x:\OS2\VIOTBL.DCP
  170.        SET VIDEO_DEVICES=VIO_VGA
  171.        SET VIO_VGA=DEVICE(BVHVGA)
  172.        DEVICE=x:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS
  173.  
  174. 14. Save and exit the file; then restart the system to place any
  175.     changes into effect.
  176.  
  177. Method 2: RSPDSPI
  178. -----------------
  179. You can use this procedure instead of Method 1 to return to VGA mode.
  180.  
  181. 1. Insert the Installation Diskette in drive A.
  182.  
  183. 2. Turn on the computer. If it is already on, perform a shutdown, and
  184.    then press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart it.
  185.  
  186. 3. When prompted, remove the Installation Diskette and insert Diskette
  187.    1; then press Enter.
  188.  
  189. 4. When the Welcome screen appears, press Esc to get to the command
  190.    prompt.
  191.  
  192.    At the command prompt, perform the following steps that apply:
  193.  
  194.    Note: In the procedures, x is the drive where OS/2 is installed.
  195.  
  196.    Case 1: You Installed OS/2 from Diskettes
  197.    -----------------------------------------
  198.    a. If RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory, type the
  199.       following, pressing Enter after each one (A: is the diskette
  200.       drive used to install OS/2):
  201.  
  202.         x:
  203.         CD x:\OS2\INSTALL
  204.         RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:x:
  205.  
  206.    b. If RSPDSPI.EXE is not in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory:
  207.  
  208.       1) Insert Installation Diskette 8 and unpack RSPDSPI.EXE by
  209.          typing the following and pressing Enter (A: is the drive
  210.          containing Diskette 8):
  211.  
  212.            x:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID x: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  213.  
  214.       2) Type the following and press Enter after each (A: is the
  215.          diskette drive used to install OS/2):
  216.  
  217.            x:
  218.            CD x:\OS2\INSTALL
  219.            RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:x:
  220.  
  221.    Case 2: You Installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN
  222.    -----------------------------------------------
  223.    a. If RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory, type the
  224.       following, pressing Enter after each:
  225.  
  226.         x:
  227.         CD x:\OS2\INSTALL
  228.         RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:E:\OS2SE21\ /T
  229.  
  230.       (E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive.)
  231.  
  232.    b. If RSPDSPI.EXE is not in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory:
  233.  
  234.       1) Unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the following command and press Enter:
  235.  
  236.            x:\OS2\UNPACK E:\DISK_8\INSTAID x: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  237.  
  238.          (E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive.)
  239.  
  240.       2) Type the following and press Enter after each:
  241.  
  242.            x:
  243.            CD x:\OS2\INSTALL
  244.            RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:E:\OS2SE21\ /T:x:
  245.  
  246.          (E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive.)
  247.  
  248. You might try to configure for SVGA. Contact the video-adapter vendor 
  249. and make sure you have the correct and latest drivers, and that the 
  250. resolution you are installing is supported in OS/2. If you have a 
  251. utility or setup program for your video, you need to follow the 
  252. instructions for that program first.
  253.  
  254. The instructions for changing your video to SVGA are in Using the 
  255. Operating System.
