The Crystalizer TidalWave 128 is an excellent sound card for OS/2, and I
recommend it, at least for normal OS/2 use (high-end sound recording is not
part of my usage, so I can't address that). It provides excellent sound and
solid OS/2 drivers, and perhaps most importantly, concurrent sound in OS/2
and Win-OS/2 when Win-OS/2 is loaded. However the installation
instructions are just a bit too cryptic, at least when replacing another
sound card with the Crystalizer. For example, even though I followed the
instructions when I replaced my Proaudio Spectrum 16, I could only get
sound in Win-OS/2 applications and in AVI movies, but none of the desktop
WAV sounds. Following are a couple of things I did to solve the problem:
A) Check the MMPM2.INI file in the \MMOS2 directory to be sure the correct
driver is shown as the default driver in the "Waveaudio", "Ampmix=" and
other settings under [Drivers]. In my MMPM2.INI file, those two settings
still specified the PAS drivers (identified by references to PAS in
their names), even though the PAS16 drivers were supposed to have
been removed. At the end of this file, I've included my MMPM2.INI settings
for you to compare with yours. BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FIX THAT FILE, MAKE A
BACKUP COPY (I copied my file to mmpm2.sav).
FIX: There are three possible ways to fix this problem: 1) Edit the file
directly (but only if you know what you are doing and have made a backup in
case you mess up the editing). 2) After first making a backup of the file,
delete every thing that clearly relates to your old sound card and the
Crystal card if you have attempted to install it and are now trying to
correct the problem. Then reinstall the Crystal drivers from the CD. This
is the method I used before I thought of the next solution, which is
simpler. 3) This one is theoretical, because I have not tried it
personally, but it would be my recommendation: Rename your MMPM2.INI
file (so that you are saving a backup) and then reinstall multimedia
support from Selective Install, so that MMPM2.INI is recreated from
scratch (without specifying any sound card), thereby avoiding the need to
guess at what to remove. Then install the Crystal drivers from the CD that
comes with the card.
B) One other thing I did and I strongly recommend: After the Crystal card
is physically installed on your system, instruct Warp to do a full hardware
detection during bootup. I don't think Warp3 does this (at least I don't
know how to select it if it does). In Warp4, this is done in one of two
ways: 1) Open the Hardware Manager's properties object and set the "Next
system restart only" setting to "Full hardware detection"; or 2) Hit
Alt-F5 when the OS/2 and white box appear in the upper left hand corner
of the display at boot up. On my system, the Crystal card was being
detected at IRQ7 until I did that. It's now correctly detected at IRQ5.
I'm now getting clear sound and am very pleased with the performance of the
card so far. I've tested it for concurrency and can confirm that I hear
sound from both Win-OS/2 apps and OS/2 apps when both are loaded at the
same time. I've tested it with WAV and MID sound files and AVI and MOV
movie files, and the sound is strong and clear. I don't think I have any
other sound producing files to test it with.
One caveat: I tried the 2.02 drivers, but they caused my system to lock up
(requiring a reset-button reboot) whenever I clicked on a DOS object. This
happened before I solved my problem, so it may not be a factor now that
I've fixed my MMPM2.INI file, but I want to enjoy the sounds I've finally
recovered for awhile before trying those again.
I hope this helps someone else.
