OSVIBAS - CONSIDERATIONS HANDLING DISPLAY PROBLEMS
12/19/94
================================================================
GENERAL CONSIDERATION WHEN HANDLING DISPLAY PROBLEMS.
================================================================
Please Read Entire Document for Full Explanation of Procedures
----------------------------------------------------------------
SYMPTOMS:
Intermittent desktop corruption or hangs when a folder repaints,
either in VGA or SVGA.
RESOLUTION:
If the problem occurs in VGA resolution, run CHKDSK, and check
for hardware conflicts. Make sure the INI files are not corrupt
and there is free space in the SWAPPER.DAT file.
PROCEDURES:
1. Note which video mode you are in. If you are in SVAG, set the
system to VGA using the RSPDSPI command. See if the problem
occurs in VGA. If it does not, it is most likely a problem
with video. If it does, then continue with the following
steps.
2. Start the system with the OS/2 diskettes and go to the A:
prompt. Do NOT try to access the OS/2 drive.
3. Insert diskette #2 into drive A and run CHKDSK x: /F for FAT
and CHKDSK x: /f:2 for HPFS. A corrupted hard disk can
cause hangs like this and CHKDSK repairs the drive.
4. Restart the system.
5. Open an OS/2 session and change to the os2\system directory.
Check the SWAPPER.DAT file. Make sure there at least 5 or
10 megs of freespace (15 MB is a good recomendation). If
the file does not have much freespace left, you need to
make so room on the partition or move the file to a
different place on the drive.
6. Check the system BIOS and make sure it is at the latest
revision. AMI bios should be dated no earlier than 5/9/91
(this is what we recommend). PHOENIX bios should be dated no
earlier than 5/11/92.
7. Make sure the INI files are not corrupt. Check the OS/2
documentation for instructions. Before you delete the OS2.INI
and the OS2SYS.INI file, make a backup by renaming them.
For example:
REN OS2.INI OS2.BAD
