  3.        TITLE:  After installing s3 svga the system boots to a
  4.        black screen w/ blinking cursor.
  5.  
  6.        DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
  7.  
  8.        Systems will boot to a black screen w/ a blinking cursor in
  9.        the upper left hand corner when:
  10.  
  11.        1. There is a hardware conflict meaning two or more device
  12.        are sharing the same IRQ, i/o address, and/or DMA
  13.        parameters.
  14.        2. The latest drivers are not being used or if
  15.        another vender's drivers, that are not supported, are in
  16.        use.
  17.        3. An unsupported video mode is installed.
  18.  
  19.        SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
  20.  
  21.        1. Make sure there are no hardware conflict as explained
  22.        above.
  23.        2. Make the correct s3 drivers are in use.
  24.  
  25.        DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
  26.  
  27.        1. Reboot the system from the A drive and get to the
  28.        command prompt using the OS2 boot diskettes.
  29.        2. Run either "set vga" or "rspdspi" to set the
  30.        system back to vga.
  31.        3. Reboot the system.  The desktop should now appear.
  32.        4. Verify that no devices are sharing the parameters
  33.        described above(IRQ, DMA, i/o address).  Video
  34.        devices usually use IRQ 2/9 and i/0 address 02e8.
  35.        Network cards often use these same parameters.  Do
  36.        not use this as a rule of thumb, the parameters could
  37.        vary from system to system.
  38.        5. Make sure you have the correct OS2 drivers to
  39.        install. The correct drivers would be the latest
  40.        version of the driver that is supported.  If the
  41.        service pak or a release containing the drivers is
  42.        installed then those drivers that came w/ them must
  43.        be utilized.
  44.        6. Reinstall the s3 drivers
  45.        using the "dspinstl" command.
  46.        7. Reboot.
