S3 systm boots black screen blnkng curso 6/02/94
TITLE: After installing s3 svga the system boots to a
black screen w/ blinking cursor.
DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTOMS:
Systems will boot to a black screen w/ a blinking cursor in
the upper left hand corner when:
1. There is a hardware conflict meaning two or more device
are sharing the same IRQ, i/o address, and/or DMA
parameters.
2. The latest drivers are not being used or if
another vender's drivers, that are not supported, are in
use.
3. An unsupported video mode is installed.
SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:
1. Make sure there are no hardware conflict as explained
above.
2. Make the correct s3 drivers are in use.
DETAILS OF RESOLUTION:
1. Reboot the system from the A drive and get to the
command prompt using the OS2 boot diskettes.
2. Run either "set vga" or "rspdspi" to set the
system back to vga.
3. Reboot the system. The desktop should now appear.
4. Verify that no devices are sharing the parameters
described above(IRQ, DMA, i/o address). Video
devices usually use IRQ 2/9 and i/0 address 02e8.
Network cards often use these same parameters. Do
not use this as a rule of thumb, the parameters could
vary from system to system.
5. Make sure you have the correct OS2 drivers to
install. The correct drivers would be the latest
version of the driver that is supported. If the
service pak or a release containing the drivers is
installed then those drivers that came w/ them must
be utilized.
6. Reinstall the s3 drivers
using the "dspinstl" command.
7. Reboot.
