Re-creating INI files (print) 6/08/94
File:PRINTINI.fax
The OS/2 Technical Support Staff feels your system
initialization files (INI) have been damaged. This can be
caused by:
- improper system shutdown
- power surges
- hardware problems
- improper INI updates by applications or OS/2
The two files involved are the OS2.INI and the OS2SYS.INI
located in the \OS2 directory on your boot partition.
Print object settings are stored in the OS2SYS.INI file.
When a problem exists with the way these settings are
stored you could run into problems such as:
- incorrect printer settings info
- multiple drivers selected in the Printer Driver Tab
- multiple ports selected in the Output Tab
- can no longer print after previous printing
- invalid object under the Set Default listing
PLEASE NOTE: If you backed up your INI files immediately
before the problem occurred AND you have not changed your
configuration much since then, you can replace the current
files with the backup set after booting off your OS/2
installation disk, inserting DISK 1 when prompted, then
escaping to an A: prompt after the "Welcome To OS/2"
screen appears. Make sure you replace BOTH the OS2.INI and
the OS2SYS.INI at the same time. If you experience
problems when booting back up you should then recreate your
INI files from scratch as shown below.
If you do not have a backup set or the backup is too old,
the best way to resolve this problem is to recreate new INI
files. The following procedure assumes you have either
OS/2 2.0 or OS/2 2.1 on your system:
IMPORTANT NOTE: All customization of the Workplace Shell
will be lost after completion of these steps.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RENAME/MAKE NEW SYSTEM INI FILES:
1. Boot with OS/2 Installation Disk
2. Insert Diskette 1 when prompted, press ENTER
3. Press ESC at the "Welcome To OS/2" screen to get
to A: prompt
4. Place Diskette 2 in Drive A:
5. Type "CHKDSK x:/F" (where x: is the OS/2 boot
drive) NOTE: If the partition is formatted for HPFS
then issue the following command instead: "CHKDSK x:
/F:2" If you receive any errors then run the above
command again.
6. Change to the OS/2 boot drive (c:, d:, etc.)
7. Type "CD \OS2" press ENTER
8. Type "REN OS2.INI OS2.BAK" press ENTER
9. Type "REN OS2SYS.INI OS2SYS.BAK" press ENTER
10. Type "MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC" press ENTER
11. Type "MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC" press ENTER
12. Type "CD \" press ENTER
13. Type "ATTRIB WP?ROOT.?SF -R -S -H" press ENTER
14. Type "DEL WP?ROOT.?SF" press ENTER 15. Remove
DISK 1 from the A: drive and reboot.
Attached please find a document entitled "ICON RECOVERY".
If applicable, this procedure can be used to recover lost
Extended Services and/or Lan Services/UPM ICONs if it was
deemed necessary to RENAME/MAKE NEW SYSTEM INI FILES by the
Technical Support Staff of OS/2.
If, for some reason, your problem persists after you have
implemented the above procedure, please contact us at our
toll-free number (1-800-992-4777) and request a call back
from a member of the Technical Support Staff for OS/2 in
reference to your PMR #.
Thank you.
