SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS PRIOR TO MAKEINI
There are different procedures to MAKEINI. It is extremely
important you read the entire fax before you choose which
procedure will be best for your system. Prior to MAKEINI,
there are special consideration to address listed below:
1) It is recommended you run CHKDSK to try and recover your
hard disk from errors BEFORE you MAKEINI.
2) If you have one of the following video cards or chipset,
it is highly recommended your system be set to VGA mode.
3) If you have a PS ValuePoint, it is highly recommended you
MAKEINI with Method #4 ONLY!!!
4) For ServicePak 2.11
a) Please note you will need to ATTRIB INI files, Type:
ATTRIB OS2*.INI -R and press <enter>
b) There have been instances where the CSD
diskettes are not functioning correctly.
Therefore, you may need to:
1. Boot off of the CSD diskette #1.
2. When it asks for the next diskette:
Insert diskette #1 from GA diskettes.
This allows a proper boot to OS/2 2.11
****************************************************************
CHKDSK instructions are as follows:
1) Perform shutdown, if you're unable to shutdown, turn off
system for 30 seconds, put Installation Disk in drive A:
2) Turn on computer, or press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart system.
3) When prompted, remove Installation Disk and insert Disk 1.
4) Press ENTER..
5) When the WELCOME SCREEN is displayed, press ESC, to display
command prompt ( A: )
6) Remove Disk 1 and insert Disk 2 (contains CHKDSK command)
7) To correct errors on hard drive, type appropriate CHKDSK
command followed by the drive on which OS/2 resides.
(X: denotes drive where OS/2 resides...C:, D:, etc.)
**If you installed from CD, you will be dropped off at CD
drive in DISK_1 subdirectory, change to DISK_2 subdir.
X:\OS2SE21\DISK_2
(X: is the CD ROM drive)
*If your drive is formatted for FAT file system, type:
CHKDSK d: /F
*If your drive is formatted for HPFS file system, type:
CHKDSK d: /F:2
8) Press ENTER and the CHKDSK command will start.
*If you have any error/s, you will need to run the CHKDSK
command repeatedly until ALL errors are cleared up.
NOTE: After you run CHKDSK repeatedly, and IF you are getting
the same error/s repeatedly, remove diskette, press,
and hold CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart system. Call OS/2
Support. Otherwise, continue with next steps in Fax.
*****************************************************************
IMPORTANT: PRIOR TO MAKEINI:
If you have one of the following video cards or chipsets,
it is recommeded to go back to VGA mode prior to MAKEINI.
IBM Valuepoint
ATI
S-3 chipset
The correct procedure is RSPDSPI to return to VGA:
Use the following procedure instead of the SETVGA command if it
is necessary to return to VGA mode. If your display is out of
sync you can follow procedure after starting OS/2 from the
Installation Diskette and escaping to the command prompt.
X: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
**CASE 1: You installed OS/2 from diskettes
1. Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in \OS2\INSTALL\ directory. If it is,
go to step 2. If not, insert Installation Diskette 8 and
unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the following command:
X:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
where: A: is the drive containing Installation Diskette 8
2. Enter the following commands:
X:
CD X:\OS2\INSTALL
RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:X:
**CASE 2: You installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN
1. Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in \OS2\INSTALL\ directory. If it is,
go to step 2. If not, unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with this command:
X:\OS2\UNPACK E:\DISK_8\INSTAID X: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
where: E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive
2. Enter the following commands:
X:
CD X:\OS2\INSTALL
RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:E:\OS2SE21\ /T:X:
****************************************************************
MAKEINI
After you have installed, it is always best to do a shutdown.
After shutdown completes and you boot back up to OS/2 it is
recommended to make back-ups of CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT,
OS2.INI, OS2SYS.INI, STARTUP.CMD, and other files necessary.
You can protect your INI files by having them automatically
backed up each time you start your system. For example, if you
include the following statements in your CONFIG.SYS file, a
backup copy of your current INI files and a backup copy of the
INI files as they existed at the previous system startup will be
made. (Note that X: is the drive where OS/2 resides. Use the
drive on which OS/2 2.1 is installed. EX: C: , D: , E: , etc)
CALL=X:\OS2\XCOPY.EXE X:\OS2\*.INX X:\OS2\*.INY
CALL=X:\OS2\XCOPY.EXE X:\OS2\OS2*.INI X:\OS2\*.INX
By copying the INI files this way, you will always be able to
recover a recent version of these files in case the user INI file
becomes corrupted. (The FIRST time the system uses the backup
commands, you will receive an error on the INX file as it assumes
the INX file is present, ignore the error.)
***ALL PROCEDURES & METHODS ARE DONE BY BOOTING TO AN A:> FROM
FLOPPIES. (STEPS 1 - 5 on CHKDSK WILL BRING UP A:> ) AGAIN,
IT IS BEST TO RUN CHKDSK FIRST, RESET VIDEO, IF NECESSARY.

BACKING UP AND RESTORING YOUR DESKTOP
You should make a backup copy of your desktop regularly. This
is particularly important if you spent a lot of time customizing
the desktop. If something happens to your desktop, the backup
copy can be used to restore it with your customization.
It is recommended after installation, to perform proper shutdown.
Do not back up OS2.INI file before starting OS/2 for first time.
For more information about the BACKUP command, refer to the
online Command Reference, located in the Information folder.
Or go to an OS/2 window, Type: HELP BACKUP and press <enter>.

COPY X:\CONFIG.SYS A: and press <enter>
6) Remove the diskette from the drive A:
*****RESTORING the DESKTOP
Certain actions might damage your desktop and leave it unusable.
For example, rearranging a hard disk while running a specific
version of DOS might damage .INI files or extended attributes.
You can recover by:
* Replacing DESKTOP with backup copy of DESKTOP - METHOD #1
* Rebuilding your existing DESKTOP -------------- METHOD #2
* Reverting back to the origninal DESKTOP ------- METHOD #3
* Replacing the INI files on PS ValuePoint ------ METHOD #4
If you decide to return to original desktop, modifications made
to desktop and CONFIG.SYS file are lost and must be re-created.
*****REPLACING the DESKTOP
You can replace existing desktop with a backup copy of DESKTOP.

METHODS FOR RESTORING A CORRUPTED DESKTOP
-----------------------------------------
** METHOD #5 IS TO BE USED WITH IBM VALUEPOINT MACHINES
There may be cases where your desktop has become corrupted. An
example is if you booted DOS and tried to rearrange your hard
disk and corrupted either .INI files or Extended Attributes.
The following procedures have been implemented to help in these
cases. There are three methods of restoring your desktop and
one method for the IBM PS ValuePoints.
Please read ALL methods before proceeding.
METHOD #1 Rebuilding the Desktop
----------
The first method tries to migrate your current desktop
configuration by merging new initialization files with your
corrupt initialization files. You can use this procedure if
you do not want to replace both the CONFIG.SYS and the DESKTOP.
Using this method you will NOT loose your customization.
X: is where OS/2 resides (EX: C:, D:, E:, etc)
1) Boot to a command prompt from floppies A:>
2) Insert OS/2 Diskette #2 and from the command prompt A:>
3) Type: CHKDSK X: /F and Press <ENTER> (For FAT system)
Type: CHKDSK X: /F:2 and Press <ENTER> (For HPFS system)
(Run CHKDSK repeatedly, until it reports no errors)
4) Change to the drive containing OS/2. (EX: C:, D:, etc)
3) Switch to the OS2 sub-directory. Type:
X:\OS2 and press <enter>
4) At the command line type:
ATTRIB OS2*.INI -R Press <ENTER>
MAKEINIOS2.INI INI.RC Press <ENTER>
MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC Press <ENTER>
5) At the command line use attrib command to delete the hidden
file WP ROOT.SF in the OS2 startable partition. Type:
ATTRIB X:\WP?ROOT.?SF -s -r -h Press <ENTER>
DEL X:\WP?ROOT.?SF Press <ENTER>
6) Re-boot your computer by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL. This should
re-build your desktop to your current desktop by replacing
corrupt .INI files with new .INI files created with MAKEINI.
7) It is highly recommended to do an IMMEDIATE shutdown after the
system is installed to make sure that all programs and files
have been associated correctly. Use the system shutdown the
system menu by clicking with the right mouse button on the
desktop (*not on an icon*) and a system menu with the
shutdown option in the middle.
METHOD #2 (TEMP) Temporary Method of INI restoration.
---------
This is similar to Method 1 except that it will initialize the
desktop with temporary INI files, also referred to DUMMY INI's.
1) Open up an OS/2 window
2) At the command prompt, Type:
CD\OS2 and press <ENTER>
MAKEINI OS21.INI INI.RC and press <ENTER>
MAKEINI OS2SYS1.INI INISYS.RC and press <ENTER>
*NOTE: INI file names have a 1 at the end of the name.
3) Edit the config.sys:
4) At the command prompt, Type:
CD\ and press <ENTER>
E CONFIG.SYS and press <ENTER>
5) Change the following lines located near top of CONFIG.SYS:
SET USER_INI=C:\OS2\OS2.INI
SET SYSTEM_INI=C:\OS2\OS2SYS.INI
to read as follows:
SET USER_INI=C:\OS2\OS21.INI
SET SYSTEM_INI=C:\OS2\OS2SYS1.INI
6) Click on file, click on SAVE and CLOSE
7) Do a regular SHUTDOWN and reboot when prompted.
8) If this procedure solved the problem, the INI files were
at fault. Edit the CONFIG.SYS, change the two modified
lines in step 5 to the ORIGINAL file names (with NO '1'
in the file name) and then follow method 4 below.
METHOD #3 Reverting to the Originial Desktop
---------
This method copies your original desktop and initialization file
and then generates new files from copies that are stored in the
OS2\INSTALL sub-directory. This method will NOT save shadow
copies of icons or extended services icons on your desktop. This
will start the tutorial and generate the desktop as though you
have just finished the installation process. You will loose
customization and CONFIG.SYS is replaced with the original one.
1) If possible do a controlled 'Shutdown' of OS2.
2) Re-boot your system by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL.
3) As soon as you hear a single beep, or you press 'Enter' at the
Boot Manager menu or password prompt(enter password);then
Press and HOLD ALT-F1 keys. Hold these keys down until the
keyboard buffer is full, the buffer is full when a rapid
beeping sound is heard.
4) Release keys after the buffer is filled.
5) The system will boot past the normal 'Black' OS2 Colored
Circles and then a note saying that 3 files are renamed and
re-created from copies in OS2\INSTALL sub-directory.
6) Your system should now return to the original desktop. This
process can take up to 10 minutes. Sometimes the tutorial
will start-up again and you may wish to review the tutorial
while your desktop is being generated.
METHOD #4 RE-CREATING THE .INI FILES
---------
If the above methods do not work this is a manual way of
re-installing without having to install with the diskettes.
You will loose customization.
X: drive where OS/2 resides (EX: C:, D:, E:, etc)
1) Boot to a command prompt from floppies A:>
then insert disk #2 to run CHKDSK.
2) At command prompt A:> Type:
CHKDSK X: /F and press <enter> (For FAT system)
CHKDSK X: /F:2 and press <enter> (For HPFS system)
(Run CHKDSK repeatedly, until no errors are reported)
3) Change to the drive containing OS/2. Then switch to the OS2
sub-directory Type:
X: and press <enter>
X:\OS2 and press <enter>
4) At the command line type:
ATTRIB OS2*.INI -R and press <enter>
DEL OS2.INI and press <enter>
DEL OS2SYS.INI and press <enter>
5) At the command line type:
MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC and press <enter>
MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC and press <enter>
6) At the command line use the attrib command to delete the
hidden file WP ROOT.SF in the OS2 startable partition. Type:
ATTRIB C:\WP?ROOT.?SF -s -r -h and press <enter>
DEL C:\WP?ROOT.?SF and press <enter>
7) Change to the desktop sub-directory and remove all the
subsequent sub-directories located beneath the desktop
directory. OS/2 2.1 is named DESKTOP. Type:
CD DESKTOP (For 2.1 FAT or HPFS systems)
To remove sub-directories issue the 'RD subdir' command.
(subdir is name of sub-directory to be deleted)
EX: RD DESKTOP
*NOTE: In FAT systems blanks in folder names are represented
by underscores '_', and in HPFS folder names with blanks
in them must be enclosed in double quotes '"'. If any of
these directories do not exist, you may omit them.
8) Re-boot your computer by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL. This should
re-build your desktop to your current desktop by replacing the
corrupt .INI files with new .INI files created by MAKEINI.
9) It is highly recommended to do an IMMEDIATE shutdown after
system is installed to be sure all programs and files are
associated correctly. Use system shutdown on the system menu
by clicking with right mouse button on desktop (*not on an
icon*) and a system menu with shutdown option in the middle.
**NOTE: If your desktop is incomplete or if it did not recreate
the desktop correctly, REPEAT steps 3 through 5 TWICE,
remove diskette, and then reboot system.
**NOTE: If you are unable to delete the DESKTOP and/or subdir,
you can follow these steps:
