  5.        TITLE:  940504 INTERRUPT RATE GREATER THAN 1000/SEC FOR A
  6.                       VIRTUAL DOS MACHINE (VDM) - OS/2 2.x

  9.        DESCRIPTION OF SYMPTONS:
  10.                I/O Problems running DOS emulation, fax,
  11.                telecommunication real-time interrupt driven, and
  12.                other timing sensitive programs.

  15.        SUMMARY OF RESOLUTION:

  17.        1) We have found that customers using higher speed CPUs tend
  18.           not to have these problems because VDMs are running more
  19.           often, and thus receive the virtualized interrupts more
  20.           frequently.  Slower CPUs are more likely to experience
  21.           problems with DOS I/O bound applications running in VDMs.
  22.           The most common applications experiencing these problems
  23.           are:  DOS Emulation software products such as IBM PC 3270,
  24.           IBM Enhanced 5250, Attachmate Extra for DOS and Windows,
  25.           etc.  DOS Fax programs, DOS telecommunciation programs, DOS
  26.           programs that rely on real-time interrupt driven I/O
  27.           processing and other highly timing sensitive I/O bound DOS
  28.           applications.  These applications are most likely to fail
  29.           with dropped connections, communication data-loss, time-out
  30.           errors, etc.

  33.        2) IBM Management has approved closure of APAR PJ03990 as a
  34.           SUG.

  37.        3) Closure of this APAR as SUG (suggestion) means that this
  38.           issue will go on to the OS/2 Planners for consideration in
  39.           future versions of the operating system.  OS/2 v2.x is
  40.           working as designed.  IBM Marketing Representatives may
  41.           submit Design Change Requests (DCRs) in order to request
  42.           changes to the design of OS/2 to allow for better
  43.           performance concerning the handling Virtual DOS Machine
  44.           (VDM) interrupts.

  47.        4) For more information concerning the design of OS/2 and
  48.           Virtual DOS Machine interrupt handling, please consult the
  49.           book entitled "The Design of OS/2" by H.M.  Deitel and M.S.
  50.           Kogan.  ISBN #0-201-54889-5.  Pages 290-291, Section 10.4,
  51.           and Page 299, Section 10.4.5.

  54.        5) While changes to the design of future versions of
  55.           OS/2 are being considered by the OS/2 Planners,
  56.           customers should try to obtain an OS/2 version of the
  57.           application that is not working as they would like
  58.           it to.  For example, there are many OS/2 3270 and
  59.           5250 products on the market, such as IBM's own
  60.           Communications Manager.  There are many OS/2-based
  61.           FAX and telecommunication programs to choose from also.
  62.           Check for listings of OS/2 applications along with the

  67.           vendors names and phone numbers on Compuserve (a great
  68.           source of this information exists in a file called
  69.           APPOS2.ZIP in IBM's IBMOS2 section).  Otherwise contact the
  70.           vendor of the application and request an OS/2-specific
  71.           version.  Most vendors are very receptive to new market
  72.           opportunities!  Give them a call!

  75.        6) OS/2 2.x's current design restricts the number of VDM-bound
  76.           interrupts that can be handled efficiently due to the
  77.           virtualized nature of the interrupt delivery system.
  78.           However, this does provide for better system security and
  79.           allows for other advantages as well (please see the book
  80.           referenced above).  OS/2's Planners must now decide whether
  81.           to change the design of OS/2 and have a change implemented
  82.           in a future release of the operating system.  Again, OS/2
  83.           v2.x is working as designed.
