  8.          ISA BUS WORKAROUND FOR INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
  9.                   ON AT (ISA) BUS MACHINES
  10. ----------------------------------------------------------------

  13. CONFIGURATION:  AT-bus (ISA) machine
  14.                 non-SCSI disk controller (RLL, MFM, ESDI)
  15.                 sometimes occurs on IDE controllers
  16.  
  17. SYMPTOMS:       Very slow install
  18.                 Very noisy hard disk during install
  19.                 FDISK errors
  20.                 Very slow operation
  21.  
  22. **For OEM systems, it is recommended to disable the following:
  23.  
  24.                  Turbo, Cache, and Shadow Ram
  25.         (Packerd Bell system need not disable these feature)
  26.  
  27. **While installing ALL systems should disconnect devices such as:
  28.  
  29.                   Modem, tape backup, Network card, scanner, etc.
  30.  
  31. **After installation completes ENABLE all feature and reconnect
  32.   any devices you disconnected.
  33.  
  34. WORKAROUND BEFORE INSTALLATION:
  35. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  36. Step 1:  Make a DISKCOPY of Diskette 1.  Use DOS to edit the
  37.          CONFIG.SYS on Diskette 1 copy.
  38.   NOTE:  Diskette 1 is the first diskette AFTER the Install Disk.
  39.  
  40.          Change the line:   BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
  41.          To read:           REM BASEDEV=IBM1S506.ADD
  42.  
  43.          This will use the IBMINT13.I13 driver.  After install
  44.          completes, it is recommended to un-REM the driver.
  45.  
  46. Alternate to Step 1 Above:
  47. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  48.   If you don't have access to DOS OR do not have a DOS editor to
  49.   edit the CONFIG.SYS, as an alternate to editing the CONFIG.SYS
  50.   file on Diskette 1, you may follow these steps:
  51.  
  52.     a) Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A
  53.  
  54.     b) Turn on the computer.  If the computer is already on,
  55.        press and hold Ctrl+Alt and press Del to restart system.
  56.  
  57.     c) When you are prompted to do so, remove the Installation
  58.        Diskette and insert Diskette 1.
  59.  
  60.     d) Press Enter.

  67.     e) When the Welcome screen is displayed, press Esc to display
  68.        the OS/2 command prompt.
  69.  
  70.     f) With Diskette 1 in the drive, rename the IBM1S506.ADD to
  71.        IBM1S506.OLD by typing the following at the prompt:

  73.               RENAME IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.OLD
  74.  
  75.     g) Continue with Step 2.
  76.  
  77. Step 2:  Insert the Installation Diskette into drive A.
  78.  
  79. Step 3:  Turn on the computer.  If the computer is already on,
  80.          press and hold Ctrl+Alt, and press Del to restart the
  81.          system.  Proceed with Diskette 1 through 5.
  82.  
  83. Step 4:  After Diskette 1 through 5 are processed, you
  84.          will be asked to reinsert the Installation diskette.
  85.  
  86.                          DO SO.
  87.  
  88.          After copying some files from the Installation diskette,
  89.          you will be asked to remove the Installation diskette
  90.          and press Enter to reboot.  DO NOT DO THIS.  LEAVE THE
  91.          INSTALLATION DISKETTE IN THE DRIVE.
  92.  
  93.         *NOTE:  In OS/2 2.1 the installation is slightly
  94.          different, it will ask for the installation diskette
  95.          then diskette #1 at this point you will see the message
  96.          take out the diskette and reboot DO NOT DO THAT, INSTEAD
  97.          PUT THE INSTALLATION DISKETTE BACK IN THE A:  DRIVE.
  98.  
  99. Step 5:  Press and hold Ctrl+Alt and press Del to restart the
  100.          system.
  101.  
  102. Step 6:  Your computer should now be rebooting off the
  103.          Installation Diskette.
  104.  
  105. Step 7:  When you are prompted to do so, remove the
  106.          Installation Diskette and insert Diskette 1.
  107.  
  108. Step 8:  Press Enter.
  109.  
  110. Step 9:  When the Welcome screen is displayed, press Esc to
  111.          display the OS/2 command prompt.
  112.  
  113. Step 10:  You are now at a command line.  If you are NOT
  114.           attempting to install HPFS, continue on to the next
  115.           step, otherwise execute the following steps to load the
  116.           HPFS driver.
  117.  
  118.          Insert Diskette #2 in the drive, and enter the following
  119.          command:
  120.                        CHKDSK c:
  121.  
  122.          (If your operating system will reside on a drive other
  123.          than C, use the appropriate drive letter instead.)

  129. Step 11:  Enter the following commands:
  130.  
  131.            RENAME C:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.XXX
  132.            COPY   C:\OS2\IBMINT13.I13 C:\OS2\IBM1S506.ADD
  133.  
  134.          (If your operating system will reside on a drive other
  135.          than C, use the appropriate drive letter instead.)
  136.  
  137. Step 12:  Remove the diskette from the drive.  Press
  138.           ALT-CTRL-DEL to reboot the system, and install should
  139.           pick up where it left off.
  140.  
  141.  
  142. WORKAROUND AFTER INSTALLATION:
  143. -----------------------------
  144. Open the system folder on the desktop, then open Command Prompts
  145. Folder Open OS/2 Window, at the prompt go the OS2 subdirectory on
  146. the drive that OS2 was installed on, and type:
  147.  
  148. RENAME IBM1S506.ADD IBM1S506.XXX
  149. COPY IBMINT13.I13 IBM1S506.ADD
  150.  
  151. Close all open folders and proceed with a proper shutdown.  When
  152. the machine is rebooted the change will take effect.
