-Configure the networking
-Configure your preferences
-Configure the signatures used
-Configure the filters
-Configure the canned replies
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 29. Network ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To Configure the Networking, several pieces of information must be supplied:
-SMTP Host Name: If you will be sending mail via SMTP, enter your SMTP Mail
Server here. You may enter the IP address (ex. 123.456.789.101) or the
hostname (ex. pmmail.southside.com). This field may be left blank if you will
be sending via POP.
-Server ESMTP Enabled: Check this box if your server supports the Extended
SMTP command set. If you do no know, ask your system administrator. You can
leave this checkbox unchecked, and PMMail will attempt to determine if your
server supports ESMTP on the first send attempt. If you experience
unreliability at first, try toggling this checkbox.
-POP Host Name: This field is required. In this entry field, enter your POP3
Mail Server. You may enter the IP address or the hostname.
-Send Using: PMMail supports sending via POP or SMTP. Neither is "better", it
just depends on which services are available to you. Most people will stay
with the default setting of SMTP.
-Receive Using: PMMail currently only supports receiving mail via POP. A
later release will support receiving via SMTP.
-Default Reply-To Field: In this field, enter the E-Mail address where you
would like to receive replies to your messages. In most cases, this is simply
userid@pophostname (ex. rrn@pop.cwru.edu).
-Preferred Real Name: In this field, enter the name you would like to appear
in the mail header as your real name. For instance, the author of this program
might put "BoB Novitskey".
-User ID: This is the user or login name that you use to access your E-Mail
(ex. rrn) You MUST fill in this field.
-Password: This is the password you supply when you log in to get your E-Mail.
You MUST fill in this field.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 30. Preferences ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Configure Preferences dialog has many options that you can choose to
customize PMMail's behavior to your own likes. These options include:
-Save Copy of outgoing mail: When you send a message a copy is placed in your
outgoing folder. If this option is selected, a copy is also placed in your
Sent folder. NOTE: the existence of a copy in your sent folder does not mean
the message was sent successfully, it merely means that you have a saved copy
there.
-Add signature to outgoing mail: This option sets PMMail to add Signature #1
(the default signature) to your outgoing messages. During new message
creation, you can override this option to add signature #2 or no signature at
all.
-Send queued messages after fetch: This option tells PMMail to try to send any
existing queued messages when you start the program.
-Check for mail at start-up: This option tells PMMail to attempt to retrieve
your messages When you start the program.
-Prompt for password at start-up: PMMail has been designed to offer you some
security from prying eyes. If you select this option, you will be prompted you
for your network password when you start PMMail. The network password is the
same one you use to login to your mail account. If the passwords don't match,
PMMail shuts down. NOTE: No security system is fail-safe. You should encrypt
any messages which you do not wish anyone else to access.
-No confirm on message delete: If you rarely make mistakes, you can opt for
PMMail not to ask you if you are sure you want to delete messages.
-Check for new mail every 'n' seconds: Selecting this option will cause PMMail
to attempt to retrieve any new mail every 'n' seconds. If PMMail is minimized
at this time, the icon will change to a full mailbox and PMMail will chime.
NOTE: THIS FEATURE IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE REGISTERED VERSION.
-Prompt for server deletion: With this option selected, PMMail will prompt you
for every message you receive, whether you would like to remove it from the
server or leave it there. NOTE: Keeping your mail on the server may result in
mail storage fees by certain E-Mail providers.
-Always no server delete: Similar to prompt for server deletion, except this
doesn't prompt you and leaves all your messages on the server for you to clean
up later. NOTE: Keeping your mail on the server may result in mail storage
fees by certain E-Mail providers.
-Editor preference: Give the full path and filename of your favorite editor.
This editor can be used to edit your outgoing messages.
-Word wrap: If selected, PMMail will wrap your outgoing messages at the number
of characters specified. Note: this is not a WYSIWYG option. The text will be
reformatted as it is sent.
-Debug Mode: If selected, network transactions will be logged to a file called
PMMAIL.DBG. If a crash occurs, this file can be mailed to the author and can
aid in determining the problem.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 31. Signature ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
To configure the signatures used, simply type in what you want each of your
signatures to be. Signature #1 is the default and will automatically be
selected if you have chosen to have PMMail append a signature to your outgoing
messages. At the time you are writing the message though, you are given the
option to append either Signature #2 or no signature instead of the default.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 32. Filters ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Filters are a method if having PMMail automatically perform some sort of action
to incoming messages. These actions are triggered by a string match in a user
defined field in the header of the message. The actions that may be performed
can be any combination of the following:
-Copy the message to a different folder
-Forward the message to another address
-Automatically reply with a canned (pre-written) reply
-Kill (Delete) the message.
NOTE: To move a message, select copy and kill.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 33. Canned Replies ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
A canned reply is no more than the body of a message that you have pre-typed.
When you create it, you give it a name. You can then reference it by than
name, both when editing a filter, or manually when editing a message. To
activate a canned reply when editing a message, simply right click in the
message body entry field and select the appropriate canned reply.
