ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1.1. Purpose & How Distributed ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Purpose & How Distributed
PROS/2 is the official newsletter of the Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group (TBOUG),
one of the largest OS/2 user groups in the United States. The newsletter
contains news and information of interest to the TBOUG membership and the OS/2
community in general.
WHY THE INF FORMAT?
We deliberately chose the INF file format to distribute PROS/2 not only because
it is becoming increasingly popular with OS/2 users, but it is also one of the
most efficient file formats for electronically distributing text and graphics.
Experienced users will already be familiar with the OS/2 "View" utility
(VIEW.EXE) and will be able to quickly find their way through PROS/2. If you
are a new OS/2 user, please take a moment to learn the facility. Standard Help
facilities are available to guide you through "View." In particular, review
the following features:
Under the Services action-bar-choice:
Search - to find every occurrence of a word or phrase in an on-line
document.
Print - to send to the printer one or more topics for the document you
are viewing; the index for the document; the Table of Contents for the
document.
Bookmark - to save your place in the document you are viewing, by marking
the topic displayed. You can then return to that topic later.
Copy to file - places the text you are viewing into an ASCII text file
(text.tmp). Note: This file is re-initialized each time you use the
"Copy to file" command. In other words, you may lose your text if you
are not careful.
Append to file - updates your text file (text.tmp) with additional text.
Under the Options action-bar-choice:
Expanding - provides the means to display subordinate topics in the Table
of Contents. The user can either expand one level, a selected branch, or
all. Subordinate topics are indicated when the plus sign (+) is
displayed to the left of a subject. Instead of using one of the
expanding pull-down-choices, the user can simply click on the (+) with
the mouse.
Collapsing - provides the reverse function of expanding; it removes the
display of lower level topics in the Table of Contents. The user can
collapse either a selected branch or all. Instead of using one of the
collapse pull-down-choices, the user can simply click on the minus sign
(-) to the left of the parent topic.
Index - displays an alphabetic list of references to the topics in the
document. The user can select one of the index entries to display the
related topic.
The "View" utility is accessed either by clicking on its standard icon (in the
shape of a book), or by typing the "VIEW" command, followed by the targeted
INF file, through an OS/2 Window or Full Screen. For example:
C:\VIEW PROS0497.INF
For additional information about "View," consult the following:
Select/click on the Information icon on the OS/2 Desktop, and then:
1. Select/click on the OS/2 Command Reference icon.
2. Select OS/2 Commands by Name.
3. Select VIEW.
You may also access the same information by going to the command line (an OS/2
Window or Full Screen) and typing: HELP VIEW
Printed documentation is available from IBM's OS/2 Technical Library:
Information Presentation Facility Guide and Reference.
"View" and "IPF/INF file formats" are commonly found in OS/2 related text
books.
NOTE: Windows users can now view INF files using the new INF Viewer from
SingaLab Pte. Ltd. of Singapore. Patterned after the OS/2 VIEW facility, the
Windows version provides the same functionality. The utility can be freely
obtained from a variety of sources:
Look for WIN_INF.ZIP on most computer networks and bulletin boards.
A copy of the product is available in IBM's Hyperwise (see LIBIPFX.EXE).
Use the version of the product accompanying "Just Add OS/2 Warp" (see
VIEW.EXE).
http://www.tbos2cla.com/tbog/utility.html
Also, IBM PC DOS 7 users can view it under DOS (without pictures) using the
VIEW.EXE supplied with that OS.
DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS
This INF file is distributed to the major computer networks and bulletin
boards. This specifically includes:
Commercial Networks:
1. America Online - In the OS/2 Forum (Ctrl+K, "os2"), under
"Newsletters."
2. CompuServe - In the "IBM OS/2 Users+" Forum (GO OS2USER), go to the
Libary & Browse the "OS/2 User Groups" section.
On the Internet:
1. At the TBOUG web site: http://www.tbos2cla.com/tbog
2. FTP site: hobbes.nmsu.edu (/os2/newsltr) or (/incoming) or (/new)
3. FTP site: ftp-os2.cdrom.com (/pub/os2/incoming) or
(/pub/os2/newsltr)
Bulletin Boards:
1. TBOUG's BBS/MBA's The "PRIDE" Network (Palm Harbor, FL)
813/786-4864
2. Clarion BBS (Tampa, FL) 813/832-3851
3. OS/2 Shareware; Pete Norloff's BBS (Fairfax, VA) 703/385-4325
NOTE: With the exception of TBOUG's own BBS, the publisher does not maintain
a formal business relationship with any of the above listed carriers, other
than purely as a distribution channel for the newsletter.
The PROS/2 files may be copied and distributed free of charge. The name of
the file is PROSmmyy.ZIP (where "mm" represents the month and "yy" represents
the year; for example: PROS0497.ZIP represents the April 1997 issue).

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
NO MEMBERSHIP, NO PRIZES
In the past, when we have had drawings for software or other items provided by
vendors or IBM, we have not placed restrictions on who could win the items. If
you were present and your name was drawn, you won. In reviewing that policy,
we feel that we will better better serve our members by restricting the drawing
to TBOUG current members who are present. So, from now on, if you want to win,
you must be a paid up individual or corporate member. If you have not renewed
your membership, dues are past due. Please contact our Treasurer, Fritz Foster
(813/341-1444-answering machine; 813/384-3900-voice; E-Mail:
AFoster704@aol.com), to either make arrangements to pay or, even better, attend
our April 2nd meeting and pay then.
CORPORATE MEMBERSHIPS
Corporate memberships are $200 per year and covers all attendees in the
subscribing organization. If you were previously covered by a corporate
membership and that membership has not been renewed, you must either arrange
for the Corporate membership to be renewed or join as an individual member.
Annual dues for individual members are $20.00. To date, only one Corporate
membership has been renewed, and that was by Catalina Marketing. We strongly
encourage any organization who is a user of OS/2 or who has several employees
who want to join the Tampa Bay OS/2 Users' Group to subscribe to a Corporate
Membership now.
MEAL RESERVATIONS
Since its beginning, TBOUG has worked to provide a quality membership
experience for its members. One of the ways this was originally done was to
provide a catered hot meal for members at a reasonable price. Last year, we
experienced several months where the number of meals ordered to meet the
minimum specified by the caterer were not purchased. Either individuals
planning to attend the meeting made reservations, did not attend and did not
cancel the reservations, or not enough people signed up for the meals. Each
time we did not reach the minimum, it caused a shortfall that had to be covered
by the treasury. To bring this under control, we changed caterers, went to
sandwiches with potato salad, fruit, chips, cookies, etc., and reduced the
number of meals ordered. This tactic was successful for a while. Last month
however, we experienced the problem again. Several reservations were not
canceled and we literally, "ate the cost."
To prevent losses in the future we are now implementing the following policies:
a. If you do not make a reservation a meal will not be ordered for you.
b. If you make a reservation, you do not cancel it in advance and you do not
attend the meeting, you will be charged for the meal.
c. If you have a standing meal reservation, you do not cancel it, and you do
not attend the meeting, you will be charged for the meal and your standing
reservation will be canceled until the meal charge is paid.
The meals currently being offered are an excellent and convenient value at
$7.00. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of this membership benefit.
If the number of people ordering meals continues to drop, we will be faced with
stopping the meals. We honestly do not understand why more people do not eat
the meals. If you have an answer to that question, please let me know.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY OS/2
April 2, 1997, the day of our next meeting, is an important date. It marks the
tenth anniversary of the release of OS/2. Despite the many reports of its
imminent demise in the trade press, it is still going strong and providing
outstanding support. To mark the occasion we will be celebrating with an OS/2
Birthday Cake. Come join us for some complimentary cake. Better yet, come to
the meeting, join the users group and perhaps go home with a great software
package under your arm as your OS/2 birthday present.
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY MEMBERSHIP DUES?
The $20.00 you pay for your annual TBOUG membership is an outstanding value.
Perhaps you have wondered what happens to that money. If you would like a
detailed report, you can see our Treasurer Fritz Foster and he can show you our
annual report. Listed below are some of the items covered by your dues:
Gifts for guest speakers.
Envelopes, paper, stamps, telephone and fax expenses.
Promotion expenses
MEAL LOSSES
Checks
Advertising
Signage
Social events
Printing
Major OS/2 activities such as last year's international "Connect the
World with Merlin" event (which TBOUG organized and led).
Support for the TBOUG BBS and Web Page (e.g., files).
WHY JOIN THE TAMPA BAY OS/2 USERS' GROUP?
Listed below are just a few of the benefits of joining TBOUG:
Association with others who like and use the best PC operating system.
Presentations on OS/2 and application systems.
Opportunity to ask questions of consultants who normally charge big $$$$
for their services.
Opportunity to talk to others who use OS/2 in their businesses and find
out how they use it.
Early presentations of new products and betas.
Updates on current happenings with OS/2 products.
Invitations to special OS/2 events.
Access to TBOUG BBS.
Special offers from vendors to TBOUG members.
Opportunity to win software as well as pick-up "freebie" promotional
software and literature from vendors.
Avenue for expressing consolidated opinions to IBM.
Opportunity to participate in events such as "Connect the World With
Merlin."
Opportunity to meet and network with key people in the OS/2 community.
Contacts for help and business.
The list can go on and on. The benefits are obvious. Join TBOUG now!
COMMITTEE MEETINGS
The format for Committee Meetings is changing. Instead of three different
committees meeting at the same time, we are consolidating the committees into
one committee dedicated to "Enhancing the Use of OS/2." The scheduled 6:00
P.M. Committee presentation for April 2 will be Installing Fix Pack 1. Don't
miss it.
MEETING TIME CHANGES
In an effort to improve our format and have better meetings, we have made the
following small adjustments to our meeting schedule. Please note them.
6:00 P.M. Enhancing OS/2
7:00 P.M. Meal
7:30 P.M. Announcements and TBOUG Business
8:00 P.M (or earlier) Featured Presentation
9:00 P.M. (or shortly thereafter) Adjourn
VOLUNTEERS
We need three current members to audit our books for last year as required by
our by-laws. Fritz Foster reports he is ready and the audit should not take
long. If you can help the users group by giving a few minutes of your time to
help with the audit please see me at the next meeting or e-mail me.

interest: Search Engines, business publications, stock exchanges,
computing, Florida colleges and universities, entertainment, Florida
specific topics, news services, special interests (e.g., autos and
cigars), sports, and weather services. This is definitely a page you
will want to either bookmark or add to your QuickList.
Download our PROS/2 newsletter
Direct access to the OS/2 CONNECT newsletter.
A Starter Kit of freeware Utilities - special files you will want to use
to fine tune OS/2.
The TBOUG Bylaws
This Internet site is made available through the generous support of Mersoft
in Tampa, Florida; John Meroth (jmeroth@tbos2cla.com) Web Master (and TBOUG
member). This Internet site is powered exclusively by OS/2 Warp Server. To
suggest improvements to the web page, contact Tim Bryce (TimB1557@aol.com) who
maintains the pages for us.
CRYSTAL BALL
Where is OS/2 going? What's happening with it? Is it dead? These are
frequent questions. OS/2 is still being funded at the same level
(approximately $150 million according to Computer Reseller News). IBM
management has continually expressed its strong support of the product.
Updates and enhancements for the rest of this year are being prepared and will
be released electronically as they are ready. A major upgrade is expected in
early 1998. This doesn't sound like a dead product to me. However, from what
I see in my cloudy crystal ball, emphasis is changing. The new directions are
network computing and JAVA. Obviously, if a software vendor can write
software once and run it on any platform, that vendor is better off in terms
of market than if it is constrained to one segment. That is the purpose of
the JAVA initiative. Write code once and run it on any platform. The
phenomenal growth of the Internet has opened new vistas for many. Networking
has been IBM's strong suite for years. What I see is movement toward better
networking and applications using OS/2 and JAVA.

group functions. There is one (1) vote associated with a corporate membership
and the company must appoint an official voting delegate. The price for an
annual corporate membership is $200.*
INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP allows an individual to join the user group and entitles
him/her to the same rights and privileges as the corporate member, except the
individual has a one-tenth (1/10) membership vote. The price for an individual
membership is $20.*
* Membership fees are prorated on a quarterly basis (operating year is January
to December).
The association is governed by a set of bylaws and an Executive Board. Members
can attend meeting functions (monthly meetings and committee meetings) at
discounted rates, and are provided free access to the user group's Bulletin
