  15. For best results, create a temporary directory on your hard drive and
  16. UNZIP LJOS2.ZIP in that directory.  This step can be done while in DOS.
  17. If you have an OS/2 PKUNZIP utility, this procedure can be done in OS/2.  
  18. Boot to OS/2 and run the executable file SETEAS from the temporary 
  19. directory.  This MUST be performed from an OS/2 prompt.  This will
  20. continue to decompress other files, create sub-directories, and will
  21. set the OS/2 extended attributes for the files in the directory.
  22.  
  23. The driver can be installed from either the temporary directory or
  24. a floppy disk.
  25.  
  26. To create an OS/2 driver installation floppy, copy the UNZIPed files in 
  27. the temporary directory to a high density floppy.

  33. The Hewlett-Packard PCL 5 Driver (Version 1.3.413C) is supported with
  34. version 1.21, version 1.3 Standard Edition, version 1.3 Extended Edition,
  35. version 1.31, and version 2.x of the OS/2 operating system. This driver supports 
  36. the following Hewlett-Packard printers:

  96. II.  PRE-INSTALLATION
  97. ---------------------
  98.  
  99. Before installing this new PCL 5 printer driver, check the following:
  100.  
  101. NOTE:  
  102.     It is very important to delete the printer driver if your previous
  103.     version of the PCL 5 printer driver is 1.31B or below.  If you have
  104.     this version and you install the new version of the driver, the
  105.     result will be two PCL 5 printer drivers installed.
  106.    
  107. 1.  Have you installed a previous version of the LASERJET
  108.     driver?  If so, follow Steps A, B, C, and D, below.
  109.  
  110. 2.  Have any other printer drivers been installed that will 
  111.     NOT be used in OS/2?  If so, follow Steps B, C, and D below.
  112.  
  113.     Note: The IBM 42XX printer driver is automatically
  114.     installed with OS/2.  If you do NOT have an IBM printer,
  115.     be sure to delete it.  Follow Steps B, C, and D below.
  116.  
  117. Otherwise, skip to part III. Installation.
  118.  
  119.  
  120. STEP A.  Delete unused or old printers:
  121.  
  122. OS/2 v 1.21, 1.3X
  123.  
  124. 1.  Select the Print Manager.  (printer icon)
  125. 2.  Choose "Setup".
  126. 3.  Choose "Printers".
  127.  
  128.     For each printer not needed:  Highlight the printer;
  129.     choose "Delete";  choose "Yes".
  130.  
  131. 4.  Choose "OK".  You will be returned to the Print Manager.
  132.  
  133.  
  134. Delete associated printer queues:
  135.  
  136. 1.  Choose "Setup" at the Print Manager.
  137. 2.  Choose "Queues".
  138. 3.  For each printer deleted in Step B, delete its associated
  139.     queue(s):  Highlight the queue; choose "Delete"; choose "Yes".
  140.  
  141. 4.  Choose "OK".  You will be returned the Print Manager.
  142. 5.  Minimize the Print Manager.
  143.  
  144.  
  145. STEP B.  Delete unused or old printer drivers
  146.  
  147. 1.  Change to the Group - Utilities.
  148. 2.  Select the Control Panel.
  149. 3.  Select the "Installation" menu.
  150. 4.  Select "Delete printer drivers..."
  151. 5.  For each printer deleted, delete its associated
  152.     printer driver:  Highlight the printer driver; choose "Delete";
  153.     choose "Yes", choose "Yes".
  154.  
  155.     At this point, one of the following will happen:
  156.  
  157.     5a)  If the focus is returned to the Control Panel and there
  158.          are no more printer drivers to be deleted, exit the Control 
  159.          Panel and proceed to part III. Installation.
  160.  
  161.     5b)  If the focus is returned to the Control Panel and there
  162.          are more printer drivers to be deleted, repeat steps 3, 
  163.          4, and 5 for each printer driver to be deleted.
  164.  
  165.     5c)  If a message appears: "The device driver has been deleted.  
  166.          Cannot delete the associated printer driver file because 
  167.          you have installed other printer device drivers from it.",
  168.          choose "Cancel" and repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 for each 
  169.          printer driver to be deleted.  It there are no other 
  170.          printer drivers to be deleted, exit the Control Panel, 
  171.          and proceed to part III. Installation.
  172.  
  173.     5d)  If a warning message appears: "Cannot delete the printer
  174.          device driver because it is associated with one or more
  175.          printers.  Remove the printer associations, then retry.",
  176.          choose "Cancel"; choose "Cancel"; choose "Cancel"; repeat
  177.          steps A and B.
  178.          
  179.     5e)  If a warning message appears: "Cannot delete the printer
  180.          driver because a program may be using the file, the file
  181.          may be read-only or the disk may be write-protected",
  182.          choose "Cancel"; choose "Cancel"; choose "Cancel"; shutdown
  183.          the computer and repeat Step B.
  184.  
  185. For OS/2 v 2.x
  186.  
  187. 1.  Refer to the Master Help Index.  Click on the "Search Topics..." button
  188.     and search for "delete printer driver".  Follow the instructions
  189.     under "Deleting (printer or plotter) device drivers" and "Deleting
  190.     printer object".

  194. III. INSTALLATION
  195. -----------------
  196.  
  197. 1.  Modify CONFIG.SYS
  198.  
  199.     In your root directory check that the line
  200.  
  201.         IOPL=YES
  202.  
  203.     appears in the CONFIG.SYS file. If it does not, use an
  204.     editor (such as the OS/2 System Editor) to add it anywhere in
  205.     the file.  To use the OS/2 System Editor change to Group - Main
  206.     and select the OS/2 System Editor.  If CONFIG.SYS is modified,
  207.     it is necessary to reboot the system before continuing.

  209. OS/2 v 1.21, 1.3X - Using the Printer Installer
  210.  
  211.     If you are running OS/2 version 1.21, start the Printer 
  212.     Installer by changing to the Group - Utilities, and selecting
  213.     Printer Installer.

  215.     If you are running OS/2 version 1.3, start the Printer Installer
  216.     by selecting the Print Manager, then selecting Setup, then 
  217.     Printer install...
  218.  
  219.     For more help on the Printer Installer, select the Help button
  220.     or in the "Help Index", select the Printer Installer

  250. V. FONT INSTALLATION HINTS
  251. --------------------------
  252.  
  253. This release of the HP PCL 5 Driver supports all resident printer
  254. fonts, as well as scalable and bitmapped external cartridge fonts and
  255. soft fonts.
  256.  
  257. All soft fonts and disk-based scalable typefaces must be installed
  258. through this driver's Font Installer.  Additionally the Font
  259. Installer must be used for any new cartridges that were not available
  260. when this driver was released.  
  261.  
  262. The LaserJet Font Installer is accessed from the Print Manager in OS/2
  263. versions 1.21 and 1.3X (Setup...Printers...Change...Printer Properties...
  264. Fonts...) and through the Print Object in OS/2 version 2.x (Open the settings
  265. on the print object, then click with the right mouse button on the default
  266. driver, and select Open...Settings...Fonts) Use the Font Installer to 
  267. install cartridges, soft fonts, and disk-based scalable typefaces
  268.  
  269. Note:  If you have cartridge fonts that were not included
  270.        with this driver or scalable disk based typefaces 
  271.        that need to be installed, you will need the 
  272.        corresponding AutoFont Support files that were
  273.        shipped with your HP font/typeface product to tell
  274.        the driver about the specifics of your fonts.
  275.  
  276.  
  277.  
  278. CARTRIDGES:
  279.  
  280. To activate a cartridge that was installed by the Printer Installer,
  281. simply select its name from the "Active Cartridge" list box in the
  282. Printer Properties dialog box.  You may select up to two(2) cartridges
  283. since there are only two cartridge slots in your printer.
  284.  
  285. To install a cartridge that was NOT installed by the Printer
  286. Installer or included on the driver diskette, insert the disk which
  287. contains the AutoFont Support Files into the disk drive, or run the
  288. AutoFont Installer ( must be run in a Dos Box ).
  289.  
  290. Type the directory name containing the AutoFont Support files 
  291. (e.g. C:\AUTOFONT or A:\). in the New Font Directory" box of the 
  292. Font Installer.  Select the cartridge name from the 
  293. "New cartridge fonts" list box.  Choose "Add".
  294.  
  295. After you have installed cartridge font(s) using the Font Installer,
  296. they will appear in the Cartridge list box of the Printer Properties
  297. dialog box.  From this dialog you can select up to two cartridges from
  298. the list.  This tells the printer driver which cartridge(s) you have
  299. installed in your printer.
  300.  
  301. Note:  Please note that the HP Z1A cartridge is now simply
  302.        called the MICROSOFT cartridge.
  303.  
  304.  
  305. SYMBOL SET SUPPORT FOR CARTRIDGES:
  306.  
  307. The following symbol sets, if originally contained in a cartridge,
  308. are always automatically supported when a cartridge is installed:
  309.  
  310.            ASCII
  311.            Roman 8
  312.            PC-8     (equivalent to code page 437)
  313.            PC-8 D/N (equivalent to code page 437N)
  314.            PC-850   (equivalent to code page 850)
  315.            DeskTop
  316.            ECMA-94 Latin 1
  317.            ECMA-128 Latin 5
  318.            Windows
  319.            Ventura International
  320.            Ventura US
  321.            Roman Extension
  322.            OEM-1

  343. However, additional "extended" symbol sets, if originally 
  344. contained in a cartridge, can be obtained.  Symbol sets
  345. are considered "extended" if they are not contained in 
  346. the list above.  If "extended" symbols sets are desired, 
  347. the corresponding AutoFont Support files that were shipped 
  348. with your HP cartridge will be needed. 
  349.  
  350. To get "extended" symbol set support, follow these steps:
  351.  
  352. 1. If you have not already done so, you must first run the 
  353.    AutoFont Support utility that was included with your HP
  354.    cartridge. (This may be done in the DOS compatibility box,
  355.    but if problems occur; boot your system with DOS and then 
  356.    try again.) 
  357.  
  358. 2. Enter the Font Installer.
  359.  
  360. 3. Delete the cartridge (if previously installed) and type
  361.    in the correct directory containing the AutoFont Support
  362.    files (e.g. C:\AUTOFONT) in the "New Font Directory" box.
  363.  
  364. 4. Click on "Open".
  365.  
  366. 5. Check the "Extended symbol sets for cartridges" check box, 
  367.    and click on "Add".
  368.  
  369.    If the cartridge has symbol sets other than those listed
  370.    above, a new dialog box will appear which allows you to
  371.    select which typefaces and "extended" symbol sets should be
  372.    installed.
  373.  
  374.    These fonts will be installed in addition to any fonts with
  375.    the above automatically supported symbol sets.
  376.  
  377. 6. After all desired typefaces and "extended" symbol sets have
  378.    been selected,  click on "OK".
  379.  
  380.  
  381. Note:  Refer to your LaserJet printer user's manual for
  382.        tables showing the exact location of characters
  383.        within symbol sets.  To print characters within
  384.        "extended" symbol sets, locate the character code 
  385.        number of the symbol you want using the symbol set 
  386.        charts in your manual, hold down the [Alt] key, 
  387.        type in the ASCII character code using your computer's 
  388.        NUMERIC keypad, then release the [Alt] key (the screen
  389.        character displayed will not necessarily match the
  390.        printed character).  It may be necessary to set the 
  391.        [NumLock] key in some applications.
  392.  
  393.  
  394. BITMAPPED SOFT FONTS:
  395.  
  396. To install bitmapped soft fonts, simply type in the name of the
  397. directory containing the soft fonts (.SFP or .SFL files).  Select the soft
  398. font names.  Choose "Add".
  399.  
  400.  
  401. DISK-BASED SCALABLE TYPEFACES:
  402.  
  403. All disk-based scalable typefaces are sold with corresponding
  404. AutoFont Support files.  If you have not already done so, you must
  405. run the AutoFont Support Installation program (or Type Director 2.0)
  406. prior to installing the typefaces into this driver.  (This may be
  407. done from the DOS compatibility box, but if problems occur; boot your
  408. computer in DOS and try again.)
  409.  
  410. To install these typefaces,  type the name of the directory containing
  411. the ready to download disk based scalable typefaces (.SFS files
  412. usually in the \TD\FONTS directory) in "New font directory".  Select
  413. the typefaces under "New Soft Fonts".  Choose "Add".
  414.  
  415.  
  416.  
  417. SYMBOL SET SUPPORT FOR BITMAPPED SOFT FONTS AND SCALABLE TYPEFACES:
  418.  
  419. Bitmapped soft fonts and disk-based scalable typefaces may be supported
  420. in ALL symbol sets. However, only one symbol set is supported per soft
  421. font or scalable typeface at any one time.  For instance, if you needed
  422. the soft font, CG Century Schoolbook in both the Math-8 and PC 850 symbol 
  423. sets, in would be necessary to install both fonts, therefore, creating 
  424. two separate entries in the font installer.
  425.  
  426. The one exception to the previous rule are unbound scalable typefaces.
  427. Unbound scalable typefaces are installed through the font installer 
  428. the same as regular scalable typefaces, however, they are not bound to 
  429. a particular symbol set.  For instance, an entry for an unbound scalable 
  430. typeface would appear as follows:
  431.  
  432.     CG Century Schoolbook Scalable (Unbound - P&L)
  433.  
  434.  
  435. Once unbound scalable typefaces have been installed through the
  436. font installer, the following symbol sets are automatically supported:
  437.  
  438.          Roman-8                
  439.          PC-850                 
  440.          PC-8                   
  441.          PC-8 Danish/Norwegian  
  442.          ECMA-94 Latin 1        
  443.          Desktop                
  444.          Windows                
  445.          Ventura International  
  446.          Ventura US             
  447.  
  448. Note that unbound scalable typefaces are only supported on the 
  449. LaserJet IIIP, LaserJet 4, and LaserJet 4M.  For more information 
  450. regarding unbound scalable typefaces, refer to the printer manuals.
  451.  
  452.  
  453.  
  454. LANDSCAPE FONTS:
  455.  
  456. The PCL 5 printers and the LaserJet IID have the ability to
  457. automatically rotate all fonts available to the printer (internal &
  458. external).  For this reason, fonts are not differentiated with
  459. respect to orientation and are only displayed once in the Font
  460. Installer, even though they may be available in both portrait AND
  461. landscape versions.
  462.  
  463.  
  464.  
  465. VI. TROUBLE-SHOOTING
  466. ---------------
  467.  
  468. Listed below are some trouble-shooting tips which may be applicable to
  469. any problems encountered with version 1.3.413C of the Hewlett-Packard
  470. PCL 5 printer driver:
  471.  
  472. 1.  If during installation, it appears to have read the disk for
  473.     only a moment and then returns to the Printer Installer or Install
  474.     New Printer Driver screen, there are two probable causes:
  475.  
  476.        a) The Extended Attributes on your driver file have been corrupted.
  477.        These attributes give information to the installer about
  478.        other files which are needed by the .DRV file.  
  479.        If the disk you are installing from is a copy, try
  480.        the originial.  Otherwise, obtain a new driver and try again.
  481.  
  482.        b) The statement IOPL=YES cannot be found in the Config.sys file.
  483.        Enter this line into your Config.Sys file and re-boot the system.
  484.  
  485. 2.  Serial Interface:
  486.  
  487.       This driver is only supported on serial ports 1 (COM1:)
  488.       and port 2 (COM2:).  You must have the com driver loaded after
  489.       any mouse drivers in your config.sys file.  For ISA or EISA computers,
  490.       use DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM01.SYS, for microchannel use 
  491.       DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM02.SYS, or for OS/2 v 2.x use DEVICE=C:\OS2\COM.SYS.
  492.       (If you had to add this line, you will need to reboot before printing.)
  493.       You must set the communication settings for your COM port in the OS/2
  494.       Control Panel (on the utilities menu).  Start the Control Panel.
  495.       Select "Options".  Select "Communications Port..."  Select the port
  496.       your printer is connected to.  For "Baud rate" enter "9600".  For
  497.       "Word length" select "8".  For "Parity" select "none".  For "Stop
  498.       bits" select "1".  For "Handshake" select "Hardware".  Choose "Set".
  499.       Close the Control Panel.  You must also select the serial interface
  500.       setting on the control panel of your LaserJet.  See your User's Guide
  501.       for information on setting the interface.
  502.  
  503.       NOTE: The following ports are supported: LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, 
  504.                                                COM1, COM2, COM3
  505. 3.  User Defined Forms:
  506.  
  507.       This item is very useful when printing with the Automatic Mixed
  508.       option in the Job Properties.
  509.  
  510.       When printing with different sized papers (Letter, Legal, A4, ...)
  511.       the form name must be selected in the Printer Properties dialog box
  512.       or the print job will wait in the queue.  This will give you the
  513.       ability to queue up jobs for which you do not have the form in the
  514.       printer yet. 
  515.       
  516.       The User-defined Forms option allows a pre-defined paper size to be
  517.       associated with a user-defined name.  For instance, Letter size paper
  518.       with a company logo could be named "Letter Head" and associated with
  519.       Letter size paper.  In this case, when printing with "Letter Head",
  520.       the job will wait in the queue until "Letter Head" is selected in the
  521.       Printer Properties dialog box.
  522.     
  523.       Therefore if you are printing over a network and using user-defined
  524.       forms, it is nescessary to define the form name on both the client
  525.       and server sides.  
  526.  
  527.  
  528. 4.  Presentation Application Driver
  529.  
  530.     The Hewlett-Packard OS/2 PM PCL printer driver is only a Presentation
  531.     Manager application driver.  Applications which support the PM windowing
  532.     and PM API's have direct access to the Job Properties dialog box.  If
  533.     the application does not provide access to this dialog, then it is most
  534.     likely not a PM app, and therefore will not use any special 
  535.     characteristics of the printer such as fonts or orientation.
  536.  
  537. 5.  "Printer Jammed" error
  538.  
  539.     This generally indicates a communication problem.  Causes can include:
  540.     timing out, using a non-PM application which has a problem, a problem
  541.     with the cable, problems with other PM drivers installed, or
  542.     a problem with the network ( if applicable ).
  543.  
  544. 6.  Job stays in Q or disappears
  545.  
  546.     Possible Causes:
  547.      a) Not enough storage on the swapping drive.  There should be
  548.         at least 5 megabytes of contiguous space available.
  549.  
  550.      b) Mis-match of form types.  The form size which is selected in
  551.         the Job Properties dialog must match a form size selected in
  552.         a particular tray in the Printer Properties dialog.
  553.  
  554.      c) Old PM drivers.  Delete all drivers and re-install.  See the
  555.         Installation procedure at the top of this document
  556.  
  557.      d) Having one printer selected on a client (or workstation ) and
  558.         a different printer selected on the server.  The model of the
  559.         printers ( i.e. LaserJet IIISi ) must be the same on the
  560.         workstation and the server.  If you have a need for more than
  561.         one printer, install multiple printers with different queues.
  562.  
  563.      e) There is a problem with creating the metafile.  In OS/2 v 2.x,
  564.         select the option for Printer Specific Format in the Queue Options.
  565.  
  566. 7.  To improve the speed of printing
  567.  
  568.      a) Ensure that device fonts are in use.  A device font is much faster
  569.         than an ATM font.  If it is necessary to use ATM fonts, ensure that
  570.         the "Fast System Fonts" in the Job Properties is enabled.  This will
  571.         allow ATM fonts to be printed much faster.
  572.     
  573.      b) Use the HP-GL/2 option.  This option should be used if you are
  574.         printing line-art type graphics.  This option can always be selected,
  575.         however best performance from the printer and driver will occur 
  576.         if you have enough memory to enable the page protection.  Ensure
  577.         the page protection is set on the front panel of the printer.
  578.  
  579. NOTE:
  580.         This driver is tuned for performance with the later versions of
  581.         the OS/2 32 bit graphics engine.  Slower performance may occur
  582.         with the OS/2 2.0 Service Pak.  To avoid these problems, print with
  583.         HP-GL/2 when possible, or use the OS/2 PCL driver which shipped
  584.         with the OS/2.0 service pak.        
  585.  
  586. 8.  Printing at < 600 DPI not always working
  587.     solution: Use a LJ III printer and driver
  588.  
  589. 9.  Graphics output not correct
  590.     solution: Turn off the HPGL/2 flag in the Job Properties Dialog
